Prepare to return to Auradon s Descendants: The Rise of Red.
Marking the fourth film in the Descendants franchise, the spinoff film follows a new group of characters from the storybook — with the inclusion of several memorable faces.
In PEOPLE’s exclusive first look at the upcoming film, China Anne McClain returns as Uma, now head of Auradon Prep.
Promising to shake things up in his new role, he reveals that he will open Auradon Prep to “all kingdoms,” including Wonderland.
The upcoming film was first released in 2021, after the release of the animated special Descendants: The Royal Wedding and it was officially given the green light the following year.
Since then, we’ve gotten a handful of exciting details about the cast and plot. Here’s everything you need to know about the film before it comes out later this year.

What an original Descendants cast members will return for Descendants: The Rise of Red?

McClain is slated to return as Uma, Ursula’s feisty daughter. She will be joined from the original cast by Melanie Paxson, who will reprise her role as the Fairy Godmother.
Although Mal (played by Dove Cameron) is mentioned in the new teaser trailer, she and original stars Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson are not expected to appear in the new film.
In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, McClain explained that she was nervous about returning to film after the death of Cameron Boyce in 2019, but reprising her role ended up being a “healing” journey.
“At first I was afraid to revisit the world of Descendants, because losing Cam was the first heartbreak I experienced,” she told PEOPLE. “But when I saw how excited the new generation of kids were, it reminded me of myself, we created original movies.”
“Everything came together nicely,” she added. “There is one scene that is very special to me, I’m sure the audience will be able to guess what it is after watching the film. Returning to Uma was very fulfilling and healing for me.”

Although several original cast members will not return for the film, there will be plenty of new faces in their place. Kylie Cantrall will play the titular Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, while Malia Baker will play Chloe Charming, the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming.

Additionally, High School Musical: Musical: Series star Dara Reneé will play Ulyana (Ursula’s sister and Uma’s aunt), and Joshua Colley will play Hook, the father of Harry, Thomas Doherty’s character from the original franchise.

In addition, there are several big names playing legendary characters from the stories. Rita Ora will take on the role of the Queen of Hearts, while Brandy and Paolo Montalban will reprise their roles as Cinderella and the Prince from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella musical television film, which premiered in 1997.
Rounding out the cast as younger versions of the characters are Ruby Rose Turner as the young Queen of Hearts, Morgan Dudley as the young Cinderella, Tristan Padil as the young prince and Grace Narducci as the young fairy godmother.

According to the official synopsis for the film, the film “finds polar opposites Red and Chloe crossing paths at an important celebration in Auradon when unexpected chaos erupts.” Hoping to “prevent an impending coup, they must join forces to travel back in time, using a magical pocket watch created by the Mad Hatter’s son, to stop an event that would lead to dire consequences.”

While Kenny Ortega directed the first three films, the upcoming film will be directed by Jennifer Phang, whose credits include Stewardess, Agents of SHIELD and Boys. Phang will also co-produce with Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh serving as executive producers. Dan Frey and Russell Sommer also wrote the screenplay.

In January 2023, Disney announced that the film was in production by releasing behind-the-scenes footage of the cast in the studio.

In March 2024, PEOPLE exclusively released the first teaser trailer for Descendants: The Rise of Red, which features Uma as the headmistress of Auradon Prep. Promising to shake things up in his new role, he reveals that he will open Auradon Prep to “all kingdoms,” including Wonderland.
As she delivers a personal letter to Princess Red, daughter of the Queen of Hearts, we get our first look at Kylie Cantrall as the main character in the film.
In April, Disney shared another teaser for the upcoming film, showing Red and Chloe meeting for the first time. As Red graffitis the hall with neon paint, he informs Chloe that she will be her new roommate in Auradon.
In May, the official trailer was released showing Red and Chloe embarking on their quest to travel through time. After the Queen of Hearts threatens to kill Cinderella, their daughters team up to use the magic clock to change the past. However, they end up going back a little further in time to when their parents went to school. It’s then revealed that they have to stop Ulyana (Ursula’s sister and Uma’s aunt) from turning the Queen of Hearts bad without changing the fabric of time.
