All About Ed Sheeran’s Parents, Imogen and John Sheeran

It’s no surprise that four-time Grammy winner Ed Sheeran comes from a creative family led by his parents, John and Imogen Sheeran.

Before welcoming Ed on February 17, 1991, John and Imogen had their first son, Matthew Sheeran, in 1989. Ed’s older brother is an award-winning composer who writes music for television and film.

“My dad calmed down a lot, but when I didn’t report to school, he was strict with me and always attacked me because I didn’t work hard,” he said.

John’s passion for Ed’s success carried over to music and he encouraged his son to take the art seriously. The singer explained that his dad “took the initiative” and often drove him to shows to get inspired.

Ultimately, John’s approach was successful; by the age of 16, Ed was working on music every day.

They worked hard to support their children

In September 2022, John spoke at the My Life in Art charity event, which raised money for Suffolk-based charities. Ed’s father, who has worked in the arts for more than 40 years as a curator and lecturer, opened up about his and Imogen’s careers during his speech, per Irish news.

In 1995 the couple moved to Framlingham in Suffolk and ran their art consultancy, Sheeran Lock. Unfortunately, the business was affected by the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008, and John and Imogen struggled to support their sons, who were both attending music school at the time.

They decided to follow their individual passions and John stopped making frequent trips to Suffolk for work.

“Out of urgent need we had to change the direction of work,” John recalled. “Imogen started her jewelry business from scratch, working from home. I started a public art lecture combining art history with art appreciation.”

“Necessity was truly the mother of invention for me because I ended up creating my perfect business,” he said. “After a very difficult year where we felt we might fail, we got back on our feet.”

Imogen started creating necklaces and bracelets to sell at Ed’s shows in 2010.

“I started making jewelry after the funding for the youth arts program I worked for was cut,” she said Sun 2011 “I made some Liquorice Allsorts bracelets for Ed to start with and they went really well.”

Several of her pieces, including Jaffa Cake necklaces and Smarties bracelets, were inspired by Ed’s favorite snacks. Imogen still sells her jewelery through the Made in Suffolk website and offers a variety of charm necklaces.

The curator revealed that Ed even encouraged him to create art after he retired. “I’m a big amateur,” John remarked. “I thought I would be hypercritical of what I was creating, but really, when it came down to it, I didn’t care… Like Edward, I give my paintings to family and friends. I love the idea that they have a little piece of me hanging on their walls.”

John’s father, William Sheeran, was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and his mother, Anne “Nancy” Mulligan, was born in Wexford, Ireland.

“I come from an Irish family, I spent most of my childhood summers, birthdays and Christmases in Ireland listening to traditional music bands,” Ed told the BBC in May 2017. Ireland Central.

On his 2017 album ÷ (Division), the artist included a song called “Supermarket Flowers,” which was inspired by his late maternal grandmother. The lyrics are specifically written from Imogen’s perspective. During an interview in February 2018, Ed called the song “the most special song on the record”, according to Capital FM.

“My grandmother was very ill while I was making the record and she passed away at the end of the record, so we wrote this song as a tribute and just left it,” he said. “It was written from my mom’s point of view; was picking a bunch of specific things and then just finishing it as a song.”

Over the years, Ed’s parents have kept many of his special artworks and personal items. In the end, John curated Ed Sheeran: Made in Suffolk exhibition for Ipswich City Council to display artwork.

According to the exhibit’s website, it ran from August 2019 to November 2020 and included some of Ed’s original paintings and photographs of him performing.

According to the British GQ review of the exhibition, John also displayed tickets to Ed’s early shows, sketches from his notebooks and programs of early music.

The “Shape of You” singer also shared stories about his parents, revealing more of their different personalities. In an interview with Time In 2017, Ed recalled them at a Warner Bros party, where John was asked to put out his cigarette.

“Someone said, ‘Sir, you can’t smoke in here.’ And he said ‘I’m Mr. Warner’ and they left him alone,” the artist explained, adding that his mom is the opposite. “She’s literally an angel.”
