Noah Kahan’s Mom Says She ‘Cried 3 Times in the Car’ on the Way to 2024 Grammys with Nominee Son

Noah Kahan can always count on the support of his mom Laura Berkenkamp.

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter brought his mom as a chaperone to the 2024 Grammy Awards, and she opened up about how emotional she is about her son’s success.

“Well, I cried three times in the car [here]”, said Berkenkamp during Live from E! broadcast before the red carpet show. “I’m trying really hard not to cry. I don’t usually look like this, so I’m trying to hold it in.”

“You look beautiful, Mom,” Kahan said sweetly to his mother, who was wearing a long-sleeved black velvet dress.

Ahead of music’s biggest night, the “Stick Season” singer told NPR that he promised his mom she’d be there for him if he was ever nominated for a Grammy.

“My mom, literally my whole childhood, was like, ‘When you go to the Grammys, you have to take me.’ She made me promise,” Kahan recalled earlier this month. “I didn’t let her talk about it until the day I found out I was nominated, and then I called her, and I said, ‘Let’s go to the Grammys!'”

He added: “She deserves it. She drove me all over New England trying to find me places to play music and so the least I could do to repay her was to bring her to the biggest night of my life, the Grammys.”

Kahan often sings about his parents and the struggles he experienced growing up and after his parents’ divorce.

In the lyrics to his song “Growing Sideways,” Kahan sings, “I’m still mad at my parents for what my parents did to them,” and in “Stick Season,” he expresses hope for healing from the “darkness” inherited from his dad.

In January 2023, Kahan shared with VT Digger that while some of his lyrics appeared to be critical of his parents, they were more of an exaggeration and did not come as a shock to his parents, who understood and supported him.

“That was definitely a conversation I had with them before the album came out: ‘OK, I’m sorry if you feel uncomfortable about this,'” he said at the time. “And I don’t know if they are or not, or if they are. I still have a great relationship with my parents.”
