Eugene Levy has made a career out of making people laugh – but when it comes to parenting, that’s not all Schitt’s and giggles.
The Canadian actor married screenwriter and producer Deborah Divine in 1977. The couple had two children, Dan and Sarah, whom they raised in Toronto away from a “show-bizzy kind of environment,” Eugene told PEOPLE in 2019. And, according to Eugene, he was is a strict parent to his son and daughter.
“The thing for us was, if you crossed the line, there was going to be some kind of punishment,” he said of his parenting philosophy. “That’s how I was raised and that’s how I raised my children.”
He continued: “It worked! Because honestly, we never had a problem with our kids. It was fun as they grew up because then they would start laughing at us.”
Making people laugh became a family affair when Eugene, Dan and Sarah starred together in the beloved comedy series Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020, Eugene and Dan played father and son Johnny and David Rose on the show, while Sarah portrayed Twyla Sands, a local waitress.

“As a dad, working in front of the camera for six years with both of my children, Daniel and Sarah, has been a great joy. I love you both and I couldn’t be more proud,” Eugene said in his speech at the 2020 Emmy Awards.

Eugene and Deborah welcomed their first child, Daniel Joseph, on August 9, 1983, in Toronto. Despite his father being a legendary comedian, Dan had a fairly “normal” upbringing in Canada.
“He made me do my homework. He punished me,” Dan told PEOPLE in 2019.
As he grew up, it became clear that Dan shared more than just strong eyebrows and a strong head of hair with his famous father — he also inherited Eugene’s comedic skills.
“There have been more times when Daniel has made us laugh than I have made anyone laugh,” Eugene told PEOPLE.
Dan eventually followed in his father’s footsteps and began his on-camera career in 2006 as an MTV host. After the show for Hills. Eugene became a father of two – and Dan became an older brother – when daughter Sarah was born on September 10, 1986 in Toronto. And though she was raised “with all the options open to them for what they wanted to do,” as Eugene told PEOPLE in 2019, she pursued a career as an actress.
Sarah first appeared on screen alongside Eugene in 2005 Cheaper by the dozen 2. However, her most significant role is the waitress Twyla at Café Tropical Schitt’s Creek. Working with her father and brother on the show meant there were “a lot of conversations over the years around the dinner table” about the show, Sarah said.

However, when labor progressed, she asked her husband to text the doctor again.
