All About George Lopez's Daughter Mayan Lopez

George Lopez’s daughter Mayan Lopez is following in his comedic footsteps.

The stand-up star welcomed his daughter with his then-wife Ann Serrano on April 2, 1996. The couple divorced in 2012 when Mayan was 15 years old. In the years that followed, Mayan started acting and now shares a sitcom with her father called Lopez vs. Lopez.

In 2022, Mayan told PEOPLE how she got her love for comedy from George. I inherited wonderful gifts from my father, but I had to train and perfect them, she said. “The biggest life lesson he taught me was to try to be the best comedian I can be.”

That same year, George was candid about paternity on his Facebook page.

“Being a father does not come with instructions. We make mistakes (A LOT), struggle with ‘how to be protective yet show love’ and in the end, all we really want is a hug and that smile that lets us know it’s all appreciated,” he wrote alongside a photo of he holds Mayan like a baby “What we all strive for is to give these children a better life and a better chance than we had.”

When talking about their sitcom with PEOPLE in 2022, George said, “My dream collaboration with Mayan is to spend the rest of my life with her.”

She is an actress

2022, said Mayan NBC Insider about her childhood dreams of being an actress. “I wanted to be an entertainer since I was 5 years old. My mom always liked to tell me old movies, a The George Lopez Show started when I was five, so I really wanted to do it then. It’s so fun to look back and see that.”

As a child, she dreamed of performing on the stage of Second City in Chicago, and she finally realized her dream in 2017. She also acted in several short films.

Before these roles, Mayan made two guest appearances on The George Lopez Show when she was a child.

“It was my first and actually my only experience in front of the camera for a long time because I think my parents wanted me to have a childhood,” she told the newspaper. “They didn’t want me to get caught by the machine at that age, which I really appreciate. But I loved it, getting into the costumes and makeup.”

She and George were briefly estranged after her parents’ split

Mayan and George didn’t speak for several years after his split with Mayan’s mom.

“We all love each other, but we have our dysfunction like any family after a divorce,” Mayan told PEOPLE in 2022. After some time, she said she was ready to reconnect with George.

“I think the longest I didn’t talk to my dad was almost three and a half years because it was just painful,” Mayan said. Today 2022 “I think time really has been the greatest healer.”

She said the COVID-19 pandemic also helped bring their family back together. The trio would FaceTime, share meals and create TikTok videos together.

“We really became a family again,” she told PEOPLE.

She made a TV show with her dad

Mayan and George started acting Lopez vs. Lopez 2022 as an estranged father and daughter who reconnect, inspired by their real-life situation.

The concept for the series originated from a 2020 TikTok post by Mayan, which detailed how her father’s infidelity affected her family.

“Mom didn’t want me to publish it,” she said Today. “So I don’t know how much of an influence I am… I aired my family’s dirty laundry. But hey, it’s the foundation for a great show!”

The video caught the producer’s eye, and Mayan and her father realized that the series was a great opportunity to reconnect.

“I think we just accepted it when this opportunity presented itself because I think our story can be so many other people’s stories,” she said. “Whether it’s a divorce or your parents are estranged or you have one parent you’re closer to than the other, these are universal themes of family and love and the pain of reconnecting.”

In October 2024, George told PEOPLE Lopez vs. Lopez could end up being his last project, though he “would like it to last a few more seasons.” He added that the more he works with his daughter, the more she “gets better and better.”

“She’s able to do more physical things, more character things, and that’s something she talked about when she was 12 and said she wanted to be on TV,” he said.

Mayan added, “It’s like working with your parent, but I always have fun with him.”

The series helped heal their relationship

Mayan told PEOPLE in 2023 that the topics Lopez vs. Lopez were sometimes few also real. “My character got Christmas with his family and I got jealous because I haven’t had Christmas with my family since [my parents had] she got divorced,” she said.

For Mayan, the series also helped solve problems with his father. “We are, yes, father and daughter between scenes. He’s going to hug me, he’s going to kiss me,” she told PEOPLE in October 2023.

“We’re always connected, but we can put our hats on and be creative and critical of each other in a way where just two performers talk to each other and feel safe, which is something I didn’t always feel with him.” She added: “To feel it now, it’s very healing.”

She supports her dad

George is a philanthropist as well as an actor, and Mayan regularly supports his father’s charitable endeavors.

She attended the George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic in May 2023 and recalled the times she didn’t attend because of their rift.

“For the last few years that I’ve been here, to be able to support him, to be able to support this charity, it all just rings true to reconnecting and connecting to what’s most important,” she told PEOPLE at the time.

Their performance was rewarded at the awards ceremony

Mayan and her father were winners of the 2022 National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Awards for Authentic Storytelling in Lopez vs. Lopez.

“This year’s laureates have helped push the industry forward and have been instrumental in the movement for increased and more accurate representation of Latinos in Hollywood since the beginning of their careers,” said NHMC President and CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo.

He likes to do comedy, even on TikTok

In addition to being an actress, Mayan also has a TikTok account where she regularly shares content about her divorced parents and a behind-the-scenes look Lopez vs. Lopez.

Her father even spoke about her popular account. “I have no control over [Mayan’s TikTok]but I wouldn’t tell her what to do anyway,” said George Diversity 2022 “I was with Anthony Anderson once, playing golf, and he said, ‘Have you seen Mayan’s TikTok?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ He said, ‘What were you thinking?’ I said, ‘I can’t think of anything!’ ” George recalled, laughing.
