Janet Jackson gave birth to her son Eissa in 2017 at the age of 50
Janet Jackson has one top priority these days: her son Eissa, 7.
The “Miss You So Much” singer welcomed him on January 3, 2017, at the age of 50, with her then-husband Wissam Al Mana. Three months after Eissa was born, Jackson and Al Mana separated after five years of marriage.
Jackson quickly adjusted to motherhood, talking The Sunday Times in June 2019, “I’m in a great space. I have a beautiful son.”
“My friends call me Superwoman,” she added. “God knows I’m not. But I think what they see is the energy and that extra boost I get from being inspired by Eiss.”

She also opened up about how becoming a mom has affected her life, including her music career. For Essence magazine In the July/August 2022 issue, she talked about her plans to release new music, but noted that motherhood is her new top priority.
“Even though it’s something I absolutely love, it’s still my job, my job,” she said. “There will be music at some point. Exactly when? I can’t say yet, but there will be. I love her too much not to. This is all I know. There’s so much I want to do – but my number one job is being a mum.”
Since his birth, Jackson has largely kept Eissa out of the public eye, rarely sharing photos of him on social media. However, she has shared some sweet anecdotes about her son over the years.

Jackson and Al Mana welcomed Eissa on January 3, 2017.
“Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana are thrilled to welcome their new son Eissa Al Mana into the world. Janet had a healthy, stress-free birth and is resting comfortably,” Jackson’s rep told PEOPLE at the time.
Members of the Jackson family celebrated the news, including the new mom’s siblings, La Toya and Jermaine Jackson, who shared congratulations on social media. Her father, Joe Jackson, also celebrated the birth of his grandson, both on social media and on his website.
He made his debut on social networks at 14 weeks
Jackson shared the first photo of her son when he was 14 weeks old, just days after she and Al Mana split. The photo showed the child yawning as Jackson kissed him on the forehead.
“My baby and me after sleep,” she wrote alongside the selfie.
He lives in London
While Jackson spent her childhood in Indiana before moving to Los Angeles, her son is growing up across the pond. Together with her ex-husband, the singer is raising Eissa in London.
He likes music
Eissa is already following in the footsteps of her musical family. During an appearance on the site in February 2020 Tonight’s showJackson told host Jimmy Fallon that her little one has already started showing an interest in music.
During the interview, she also revealed that Questlove, frontman of The Roots, gave her son a drum kit that he “loves”.
When Fallon joked that he would give Eissa a harmonica, Jackson replied, “He already has it. It’s incredibly musical.”
He plays the cello
In the same interview with Fallon, Jackson said that her son first decided to play the violin when he was 2 years old, but soon changed his mind and switched to another stringed instrument.
“He likes classical music. On the first day of school, he brought his violin to school. On the third day of school, he says, ‘Mom, I want to take my cello to school,’” she explained. “I said, ‘Honey, you don’t have a cello.’ He says, ‘I’ll take one, but turn your violin into a cello, please mom.’ ”

Jackson said her assistant, Terry, used her creativity to make a makeshift cello for Eissa.
“My assistant Terry — we rushed to his class and she took a straw and stuck it to the bottom of the violin. He liked it,” she explained. “He posed. He took it to school.”
However, Eissa told Jackson’s second assistant, Shanta, that her mother would buy him a real version of the instrument. She added: “So he has a cello… He’s taking cello lessons. He loves his cello lessons.”
He loves Bruno Mars

Months after her first birthday, baby Eissa already had a favorite musician in mind: Bruno Mars. Jackson spoke with Billboard in May 2018 before receiving Billboard Icon Award, telling the publication: “Bruno [Mars] was really the first music my son responded to.”
“During and after his birth, I consoled myself with Brazilian jazz, music that always relaxes me,” she added. “Then when the baby started crawling, Bruno was big and on the radio all the time. It delighted us both.”

Even as a child, Eissa had already begun to show interest in the family business, including imitating his late uncle Michael Jackson, who died in June 2009 at the age of 50.
In November 2019, Jackson appeared on an Australian show Carrie & Tommy and called her son “incredibly musical.” She said she likes watching her band perform and that she likes “drums, violin, guitar, piano.”
“He makes up the tunes, carries the tune, has a really good tone,” she said, adding that her son “does what my brother [Michael Jackson] made of ‘[They Don’t] Care About Us, march and hand.”
“He does a few things. He does the head [movement]. He likes ‘Smooth Criminal’ and ‘Oooo,’” she explained.
However, if her son doesn’t end up pursuing music and entertainment as a career, she’s okay with that.
“It’s really about what he wants to do with his life,” she added.

When Eissa was still a baby, Ciara and Jackson stopped by Disneyland to play with their children, including Ciara’s oldest child, Future Zahir. Jackson’s former backup dancer James Collins posted a photo of the group on his Instagram Story, in which both women were holding their sons.
The “1, 2 Step” singer later shared a selfie of her and Jackson from the date, as well as a video of her and Future riding a roller coaster.
He loves paw patrol
Eissa is a big fan of the Nickelodeon animated series paw patrol. Taking to Instagram in December 2019, Jackson showed off the stuffed animals the show sent not only to her son but also to his classmates. A group of children posed in a group, proudly showing off theirs paw patrol toys, with many holding toys high in the air.
“THANK YOU @PawPatrol for sending such amazing gifts to my baby and giving gifts for all his classmates,” she wrote in the Instagram caption. “They love them so much.”
He doesn’t have a babysitter
Jackson is a hands-on mother. In several interviews during the early years of Eissa’s life, she talked about being a working mother, saying Stellar of the Daily Telegraph magazine in August 2019: “It’s hard to be a working mother. I don’t have a nanny, I do everything myself.”
“Of course, when I’m working someone is watching him, but it’s my baby and me,” she added.
When she appeared on Carrie & Tommy in November 2019, she discussed her decision to stop hiring a nanny again. She was inspired, she says, by her own mother, who raised nine children alone.
“My mother [Katherine Jackson] did that. Her mother did it. Why I can not? We’ll see. I will definitely need someone in the future, some help here and there, but I don’t have anyone [right now] and I love it,” she explained.
Janet Jackson says she loves ‘everything’ about being mum to six-year-old son Eissa
Jackson said the experience can be “very tiring,” adding: “You never get enough sleep, you never get enough sleep. And he always wakes me up, ‘Mom? Mom, mom, get up. Mom, please get up. Mom, get up.’ ”
“I’ve always been a patient person, but you have to have more patience [in motherhood] and I never knew I was as patient as I really am,” she continued. “He is in the first place in my life. I get up, I go to sleep – it’s all about him. He is in the first place in my life.”
