Jeremy Allen White adores his parents, and his mother played a key role in his career.

White’s parents raised him and his younger sister in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, and White still lives in the New York area.

“I grew up in Brooklyn, we have family here. We try to come in the summer to see friends and family while we’re here,” he told Fault in 2022. “I love those New York nights where the sun can go down but it’s still really hot. His mother is originally from North Carolina

While White may have taken after his parents in terms of his love of performing, his cooking skills are not a family trait. White attended culinary school to prepare for the role of Chef Carmy Bearand he told Falstaff that his parents weren’t exactly Michelin star material when they were growing up.

“My parents are wonderful, but they’re not good in the kitchen,” he said. “For me, the biggest comfort was grilled cheese and canned tomato soup. When I was sick, it was always a very comforting meal.”

These days, White says he cooks mostly for family holidays.

“I had Christmas Eve dinner, I had Christmas dinner for me and my family — all big meals,” he told PEOPLE in August 2022. “I love a Sunday roast. I love something really hearty, almost winter comfort food. I’ll do short ribs, roast vegetables, some kind of potato. That’s what I like to do and what I like to eat.”
