Meet Maria Sharapova’s little one.
The retired tennis star welcomed her first child, son Theodore, with fiancé Alexander Gilkes in July 2022.
A few days after giving birth, Sharapova shared the exciting news of his arrival on Instagram, introducing her family of three to the world.
Since then, the five-time Grand Slam champion and her fiance – a British businessman and co-founder of online auction house Paddle8 – have been sharing moments of their son on social media.
Sharapova announced her pregnancy on her 35th birthday in April, with a post on Instagram. Now, both Sharapova and Gilkes are enjoying their roles as “mom” and “dad”.
“Every week you learn something new about them, about their personality,” Sharapova told PEOPLE after becoming a parent to Theodore, a month after he was born. “While it’s a full-time job, it’s also a joy to see this little man grow and express himself and to share my waking moments with him. It’s all very special.”

Sharapova and Gilkes welcomed their first child, son Theodore, on July 1, 2022. They announced the exciting news on Instagram, sharing a snap of their little one with the world.
“Theodore,” the retired tennis star captioned a picture of her and Gilkes holding their baby boy. In the title, she also wrote his date of birth in Roman numerals.
“The most beautiful, challenging and valuable gift our little family could wish for,” she added.
He has a nickname
Sharapova and Gilkes call Theodore by several different nicknames. They often call him “T” and “Theo” when they write about him on Instagram.

Sharapova doesn’t often post Theodore on her Instagram feed — but when she does, she shields his face from the camera to protect her little one’s privacy.
In April 2023, the athlete posed with her son at the celebration of her birthday. “My first birthday as a mom,” she wrote alongside a photo of her cradling Theodore.
But just because Sharapova doesn’t share every picture of Theodore with her followers doesn’t mean her photo isn’t littered with photos of her son.
“When your photo album has a few new photos besides your baby,” she joked in an Instagram caption of a carousel of photos of her at a work event.
His mother, a professional athlete, fits fitness into his schedule
Sharapova may have retired from tennis professionally, but she is still an athlete! The multi-tasking mom shared a look at her November 2022 workout routine with her Instagram followers.
“A little peek at my recent @tonal workouts while little T sleeps (hopefully 🤫),” she captioned the video (which she hilariously paired with “Sweet Dreams” by Trinix).
The following month, she shared another workout snap she snuck in amid her busy schedule. “We found 30 minutes, a 1lb Bala weight, an imaginary jump rope and a sense of humor,” she captioned the Instagram post.
A month after giving birth to Theo, Sharapova opened up to PEOPLE about getting back into her normal workout routine — which took some patience for the former professional athlete.
“I spent the last three months of my pregnancy, I would say in the nesting phase where I didn’t do too much. I didn’t feel like my body was ready and I was getting quite tired. Towards the end I felt quite uncomfortable,” she explained. “When I gave birth, I had I have that renewed energy, which I think I needed.”
“This energy gave me the confidence to start exercising slowly. And when I say exercise, at first it was stretching, then a little toning, then it became more pilates and now I’m walking longer and soon I’ll be doing a little more cardio.” Sharapova said.
“It’s about taking the right steps and not getting too far ahead of yourself because you really want to get back in shape and you want to get your body confidence back, but it takes time,” she continued. “And I think I’m pretty patient.”

Sharapova doesn’t take her role as “mom” lightly — even when she’s on vacation! In October 2022, the tennis champion flew to Greece for a little getaway.
On the Instagram carousel, Sharapova shared with her followers everything from her unique European trips to her duty to express milk while traveling.
“Catching the last rays of summer in 🇬🇷 Last pic…always on duty 🍼 even inside caves and dead battery 😆,” she jokingly captioned her post.
The Grand Slam champion has previously been candid about her breastfeeding experience on Instagram and reiterated the “challenging” beginnings of breastfeeding in a conversation with PEOPLE in August 2022.
“You really don’t know much about what you’re doing and then you just realize it. And then, in the end, everything is fine. I think it’s more of a scheduling problem. There are so many times a day,” Sharapova said then.
“It’s about much better schedule management and you’re not doing things on the spot. You have to plan a little bit ahead,” she added.
He is Alexander Gilkes’ ‘greatest gift’
Gilkes is one proud dad! The father-of-one celebrated Father’s Day with a heartfelt Instagram tribute to his own dad — and gave a special shout-out to Theo for making him a father himself.
“Happy belated Father’s Day to everyone lucky enough to play this role. Thank you Padre for being a role model father to your boys and girls, with just the right balance of quirky and kind, and Theo for giving me the greatest gift of fatherhood ❤️,” Gilkes captioned the presentation of the sweet photo with your boy.
