All About Matthew McConaughey’s Son Levi McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey always wanted to be a dad, and his dream came true when he and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey welcomed their first child, Levi McConaughey, in July 2008.

“I remember when I was 8 years old, the only thing I really knew was that I wanted to be a dad,” the actor said on HISTORYTalks in March 2020. In October of that year, Matthew told PEOPLE that he was proud to be able to tell all of his children — including Levi’s siblings, Vida and Livingston – were “very caring and kind individuals”.

Levi also publicly complimented his father. In a touching birthday message shared on Instagram in November 2023, Matthew’s eldest praised his role model.

“People know Matthew McConaughey as an actor and now a writer, but I know him as my father,” he wrote in the caption. “A man who is always with us no matter what and a man who taught me to appreciate the journey, not just the destination.”

When Camila and Matthew let Levi join Instagram and TikTok for his 15th birthday, the dad-of-three told PEOPLE how proud he was of his older son.

“After two to three years of talking about pitfalls and ups and downs [of social media] … we felt he had enough information and was mature enough to tell his own story,” said the actor. “He’s a very considerate and cool young man. I hope the world out there can reciprocate and treat him the same way he treats them.”

On July 7, 2008, Matthew and Camila welcomed their first child, Levi.

Matthew and Camila have always wanted to instill the value of hard work in their children.

Matthew’s outlook on his career changed after he became a father to Levi.

“I looked up and started saying… you know what, I just had a son,” he shared at HISTORYTalks 2020. “[The] the story I’m living is more vibrant than the characters in the stories I feel like I’m playing in some of these romantic comedies.”

That’s when Matthew said he began his “unbranding” phase, when he focused more on being with his family and taking on serious roles.

“All of a sudden things came to me that I wanted to do,” he continued. “The dramatic roles I aspired for didn’t come to me. I’ve been running for about 11 years, which I enjoy.”

While in France for Paris Fashion Week 2023, Camila took Levi and his sister Vida to Refettorio Paris to volunteer.

The mom of three posted a video on Instagram of Levi and his sister getting to work in the kitchen.

“We cooked, helped serve, cleaned,” Camila wrote in the description. “They are creating a first-class dining experience for the needy and homeless in Paris by bringing their dignity to the forefront.”

The experience was impressive for Levi, and he shared his thoughts on Instagram.

“I got the chance to cook at @refettorioparis for some people who normally don’t have a very good meal,” he wrote. “It was really cool to serve some people who normally can’t eat it.”

In the midst of the Maui wildfires in August 2023, Matthew and Levi posted a video on Instagram to announce that they would be sending supplies to the Hawaiian island and encouraged their followers to contribute.

“We are grateful to be able to help get these critical supplies to the children and families in need,” they wrote in the caption.

Levi likes to be active with his dad

When Matthew welcomed Levi, he couldn’t wait to take him to the ocean. “It’s about to get salty,” he said Parade in September 2008.

Since he was born, Matthew said Levi was “outside as much as inside” and it was important to him to get his son “out into the world.”

“I like the city, but I also want some space. And my boy will be out in the middle of it,” Matthew said.

It seems the actor’s hopes for an outdoorsy son have come true. In March 2023, Matthew posted a photo on Instagram of Levi wrapped up with a surfboard in hand.

“Surf souvenirs,” the proud dad captioned the photo.

Levi is a musician

Matthew told PEOPLE in October 2020 that Levi “came out of the womb knowing a major on the piano,” but his musical creativity really blossomed while they were stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In the last six months, he’s really started listening to composers, and now he can listen to a movie and tell you, ‘Oh, that’s Hans Zimmer,’ or ‘That’s John Williams,'” Matthew said.

The family also enjoyed a 2019 BTS concert together to celebrate Levi’s birthday.

“My son walks around the house for months before he wants to go to this concert and knows all the songs. He rapped Korean,” the Interstellar star divided into The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “So he wanted to go on his birthday. We took a few of his friends, Camila and I went and loaded up [them] up — we had fun.”

The actor said everyone was “sweating dancing… it was fun.”

He got his first accounts on social networks in 2023

Matthew and Camila kept Levi off social media until they felt he was old enough to handle it. That day came in 2023, when he was allowed to create TikTok and Instagram accounts as a 15th birthday present.

Levi shared his pride in his father and his accomplishments, such as when Matthew published his second book, Just because, in September 2023.

“It’s been so cool watching my dad the last few years,” Levi wrote under a photo of him reading the new issue. “He has been writing and creating and it was great to see his first book #GreenlightsBook! She is now on her second book, #JustBecauseBook and I am really excited about it. I can’t wait to see what he does next…”
