All About Michael Phelps’ 3 Kids (and Baby on the Way!)

Along with a staggering 28 Olympic medals, Michael Phelps also has a brood of his own: his three children and a baby on the way.

The Olympian has sons Boomer (7), Beckett (5) and Maverick (4) with his wife Nicole Johnson. In October 2023, Nicole confirmed on Instagram that the couple was expecting their fourth child.

“For those wondering… yes! We are expecting our fourth Phelps in 2024 💙💙💙💙,” she wrote.

The family of five likes to spend quality time together, from watching movies to going to football matches. Michael also credits his family for helping him overcome his depression, as their routines and rituals helped lessen the effects, he told PEOPLE in 2021. One such routine is their daily family dinners at 5 p.m.

“As a kid, I always wanted to have dinner with my family, but when my parents were separated, it didn’t happen very often,” Michael told PEOPLE. “I love how we have dinner together at the same time every night.”

Because Michael still struggles with mental illness at times, he is determined to help his sons learn how to deal with negative feelings.

“They talk about their emotions,” said the retired professional swimmer. “That gives me a lot of hope. I just want them to be as prepared as possible.”

Nicole added that when Michael is having a particularly rough day and “can’t get out of bed,” their kids will “either try to be close to him or question what he’s going through.”

“We don’t hide from emotions. We teach them that mom or dad have a moment and that we need to either give them space or ask them if they want a hug,” she explained. “And it taught them to have permission for their own and feelings to be heard.”

And when it’s hug time, Michael said the kids “just make me melt.”

“It just makes me fall to the ground. I absolutely love being around them,” Michael added of his children.

Michael and Nicole welcomed their first son, Boomer, on May 5, 2016, after previously announcing that they were expecting a boy.

At just 3 months old, Boomer traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to watch his dad compete in the 2016 Olympics. He wore red, white and blue headphones during the races as he watched (and napped) from the stands while his dad won five gold and one silver medal.

Michael told PEOPLE after the Olympics that his full focus is on Boomer now that he’s retired from swimming. “I’m leaving here and going home, and it’s going to be all about Boomer,” he said after winning in Rio. “I only have this opportunity with him once. So I’m going to use this time to be a hands-on dad.”

“Fatherhood has changed me,” he added. “And I like it. I am ready for this new phase of my life.”

After the Olympics, Michael opened up about Boomer’s unique name The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He explained that the couple didn’t want a “normal name” and didn’t think twice after coming up with Boomer.

“We heard the name and we didn’t want, like, a normal name,” he said. “I mentioned it to Nicole, and she said, ‘Oh, that sounds kind of cool.’ Boomer, like boom boom…we didn’t know either.”

He continued: “We had no other option – when we chose it, we said, ‘Yes.’ He’s going to be a great kid for sure.” Boomer lived up to the name, accumulating over 500,000 followers on Instagram.

At 7 months old, Boomer served as ring bearer for his parents at their wedding in 2016. “We put [the ring] in one of those little mesh bags you have for fine jewelry,” Nicole said Brides. “We have one that matches his [Burberry] suit, and we put it around his wrist, and he carried it down the aisle [friend and gold medal swimmer] Allison [Schmitt]our roommate.”

Now 7 years old, Boomer spends a lot of time with Michael as the two enjoy cooking and playing cards together.

In June 2023, Boomer graduated from Kindergarten, which the family celebrated with “Mud Mania”. Nicole and Michael posted a joint carousel of Boomer and his little brother graduating from school, and the final slide shows Boomer covered in mud after participating in the tradition.

In August 2017, Michael and Nicole announced that they were expecting their second child. Six months later, on February 12, 2018, Beckett was born.

“Magic moments yesterday… Nicole and I would like to introduce Beckett Richard Phelps to the world! We had a healthy boy and a healthy mom,” Michael wrote in an Instagram post announcing Beckett’s birth.

At just 11 weeks old, Beckett was already following in his father’s footsteps when he starred in his first ad campaign, a partnership with Huggies for their Little Swimmers waterproof nappies.

“We’re looking forward to enjoying the water as a family of four during Beckett and Boomer’s first summer together and are excited to team up with Huggies Little Swimmers to create the ultimate #WaterPlaybook for babies so they too can be confident and comfortable in the water ,” Michael said in a statement.

Beckett is close with his older and younger brothers and the family enjoys spending time with each other, especially during the holidays. In December 2020, Michael opened up about what Christmas looks like for the Phelps family, sharing his sons’ excitement for the fun-filled day.

“Being in Arizona, we have sunshine and palm trees, and some of our palm trees have Christmas lights. This is the first time we’ve done this and it’s really cool to see the excitement on [my sons’] face,” he told PEOPLE. “I mean, everybody’s different.”

“Boomer is obviously older, he’s experienced a bit more, but every time Beckett sees the Christmas lights, his face lights up so much, and it’s the most precious smile in the world,” added Michael. “Maverick walks by and just gasps every time he sees a Christmas tree.”

The former swimmer also told how his sons were busy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They play outside, they ride their bikes, we have a little dirt track that we built in front of the house that they go out on and ride,” he said. “They love it. They absolutely love it.”

The Phelps family’s third son, Maverick Nicholas, was born on September 9, 2019. The couple announced the happy news on Instagram with a professional photo of all five of them sitting on a hospital bed looking at Maverick.

“A family of five! Welcome @mavericknphelps to the world! Born on 9/9/19. Mom and baby are healthy, and the boys are excited to be big brothers! #housefullofboys,” Michael captioned the photo.

Two months after welcoming their third son, Michael spoke to PEOPLE about how Nicole felt being the only woman in a family with four boys.

“I think Nicole said something like, ‘I’m so lucky to have a house full of boys and no girls,’ and Boomer looked at her and said, ‘Mom, you’re the girl in our house,'” Michael said. “That’s what we’ve been saying and it’s true, she’s the queen.”

In June 2022, all three of Phelps’ children joined him when he was inducted into the US Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame. The athlete took some cute pictures with his sons, who were dressed in the same black suits and white sneakers.

That same year, during Christmas, Phelps and Nicole dressed their sons in elf costumes for another cute family photo. Michael fraternized with the boys in green petticoats with matching yellow tights.

“I love all my elves 💛💚🎄,” Nicole wrote in her Instagram post capturing the moment. “Merry Christmas from my family to yours 🥰.”

Nicole confirmed that she and Michael are expecting again in a post for her anniversary on October 30, 2023.

She posted a picture of herself posing with Michael in a Baltimore Ravens jersey, holding her pregnant belly, along with pictures of them on the same day for the past 7 years since their wedding.

“Memory from October 29th for the last 7 years with you @m_phelps00 (couldn’t find a pic from 2019 🤭) Happy anniversary to my best friend, husband and life partner ❤️ I couldn’t ask for anyone better!” she wrote in the caption “For those wondering… yes! We’re expecting our fourth Phelps in 2024 💙💙💙💙,” she added.
