All About Padma Lakshmi’s Daughter Krishna Lakshmi

Padma Lakshmi’s daughter Krishna is growing up fast!

The A top chef host welcomed her mini-me on February 20, 2010, and since then, the mother-daughter duo have shared plenty of cute moments together, including trips to the beach and glamorous ball outings — often in coordinating looks.

Padma, who was initially told that she might not be able to have children, was overjoyed to become a mother.

“Coming into this world, you were the greatest joy of my life,” she wrote on Instagram in honor of Krishna’s 13th birthday. “Of course I love you with all my heart, but I also really like you! You have a wicked sense of humor. There’s no one I’d rather spend time with, no one I’d rather laugh or cry with.”

The celebrity foodie praised her daughter’s “emotional wisdom” and called her a “rare delight” who lights up a room. “I look forward to watching you grow into the best version of you. Light of my life, you keep me grounded and sane and never let me take myself too seriously,” she concluded.

Padma announced Krishna’s birth on February 20, 2010.

“Emmy-nominated model, author and presenter A top chef Padma Lakshmi gave birth to a baby girl named Krishna Thea Lakshmi on Saturday [Feb. 20th]”, her representative told PEOPLE at the time.

The celebrity chef spoke publicly about her endometriosis diagnosis before Krishna was conceived and was told she might not be able to have children.

“It put the problem front and center for me and I was devastated. I really didn’t know if I was going to be able to have children, and I knew I wanted to have children,” she shared on PEOPLE’s I’m becoming a mom podcast in 2021.

She continued: “When I finally got pregnant it was such a surprise and such a joy. I didn’t [think] motherhood would be so much fun. I think I was so elated that my body helped.”

Padma also revealed that she was bedridden in her third trimester due to placenta previa (when the placenta covers the mother’s cervix).

“I just did everything from my bed. I had meetings. We put a nice little leather chair at the foot of my bed. And I went to meetings with network executives,” she said of the arrangement, adding that her mother, a nurse, was here to help her care.

At first Padma kept her father’s identity a secret

Krishna’s paternity was initially a secret, although it was eventually revealed that Padma’s then-partner, businessman Adam Dell, fathered the child; the couple was together on and off from 2009 to 2021.

Padma found the speculation surrounding Krishna’s father “humiliating” and was not a big fan of media attention.

“It was certainly nasty when the media started snooping in various countries – not only in America, but also in India, England, Australia,” she recalled. I’m becoming a mom podcast.

She was raised by a “village” of family and friends

When her daughter was about 20 months old, Padma shared that although she was essentially Krishna’s single mother, her daughter was raised by many important people in her life.

“It’s true, I’m a single mother. But I don’t feel alone parenting my daughter at all,” she explained. “Krishna has a whole other side of her family that also loves her. And so I am Krishna’s parent, but so are her grandmother, aunts and cousins, uncles and friends.”

She added, “The more people around her, the more different kinds of people in Krishna’s life, the better off she is.”

Padma calls her “Littlehands”

Padma’s cute nickname for her daughter is “Littlehands,” which she often uses when talking about Krishna on Instagram.

In December 2022, she captioned a photo of her and Krishna both dressed in black: “Lately when Littlehands comes home the first thing he wants to do is cuddle and watch Wednesday together. I guess I’m not surprised– she’s always had a bit of a goth vibe💀.”

Padma struggled with how much to share with Krishna’s life

When Krishna was little, Padma posted about her daughter on Instagram, but covered her face with star emojis.

However, as she got older, she started showing her daughter’s face on social media, in part because of her Hulu docuseries Taste the nationin which Krishna appears.

“I struggled with it,” Padma told PEOPLE in November 2021 of allowing her daughter to appear on the show. “My daughter has paparazzi with me all the time in New York and like any other parent, I’m proud of her, so I want to put her on my Instagram etc. But I want her to make a choice when she’s old enough about whether she wants to expose herself in that way .”

“On the other hand, I go into people’s homes and find myself in some very intimate situations with all my participants, asking them to open up and expose themselves to me with my camera crew,” she said of her series and filming during the pandemic. “So if I’m not willing to open up about my own family and myself, I would feel inauthentic or insincere.”

She appeared in several episodes Taste the nation

Much like her mom, Krishna loves spending time in the kitchen — and appearing on her mother’s various cooking shows. Krishna appeared in a Hanukkah-themed episode Taste the nationconsidering that her father is Jewish.

“Her father’s family is from New York and they’re Ashkenazi Jews and they lived on the Lower East Side. So it would be disingenuous to do an episode about Ashkenazi Jews in New York and pretend I have nothing to do with it,” Padma told PEOPLE during her interview in November 2021. “It made perfect sense for her to be there for that Hanukkah dinner. And that’s why she’s there in that sequence.”

Krishna also isn’t afraid to roast her famous mom from time to time, like when she interrupted a cooking video posted on Instagram in August 2022 and told her mom that “nobody cares” about what she’s filming.

“My daughter keeps me humble,” Padma captioned the video.

He likes to cook

It seems that Krishna is already following in his mother’s footsteps. When she was little, her mom gave her a set of small cooking tools, like a mortar and pestle, and her skills grew from there.

“The other day she FaceTimed me to ask, ‘Mom, how hot does the oil have to be to fry the chicken?’ I said, ‘What? That’s too dangerous!’ But she was adamant about it, so I took her through all the steps,” Padma said of Krishna’s culinary talents in September 2020. Her daughter had already prepared her tools and ingredients, which greatly impressed her chef mother.

– When I asked her how she knows how to do it, she said: Mom, I’ve been watching you for years! Padma added. Krishna even prepared a couscous and vegetable dish for his mom when she was sick.

She celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in 2022

2022 was a big year for Krishna, who celebrated her Bat Mitzvah, took off her dentures and got her nose pierced.

“Big year for my little girl,” the proud mom wrote on Instagram alongside a series of pictures of Krishna looking adorable in a strapless black dress with ruffles at her party.

Krishna is a style icon in the making, just like her glamorous mom. Padma and Krishna looked lovely in matching black dresses for the 2023 Blossom Ball in NYC, with Krishna in a high-low black mini skirt with a full feather skirt and Padma in a tight halter dress with a flower in her hair.

Padma also shared photos of the couple wearing the same overalls and beautiful red dresses.
