Singer Elle King has her roots in the entertainment industry long before her songs like “Ex’s & Oh’s” topped the charts. She is the daughter of comedian Rob Schneider and model London King.
While Saturday night live The alum and the Grammy-nominated singer weren’t always close, but now they have the kind of relationship King “always wanted,” and Schneider is one of her biggest cheerleaders.
“Honestly, he’s probably my biggest supporter,” King told PEOPLE in 2018. “Like, every other day I’ll get messages in all caps like, ‘Your album is going to change the world! I can’t wait for your fans to hear what you’ve done ! I love you! I’m so proud of you!’ And that’s a beautiful, wonderful thing.”
Still, King opened up to PEOPLE in February 2023 about the challenges of being a famous father, noting that she “didn’t want to be known as somebody’s kid.”
“I wanted to be myself,” she continued. “I’ve never wanted to borrow money from anyone and I’ve worked hard for my family and for myself. I want to build a life for myself and I want to know that I’ve done it.”

King was born on July 3, 1989 in Los Angeles, California to Tanner Elle Schneider. She was mostly raised in Ohio by her mother and stepfather Justin Tesa. Growing up, King said Schneider wasn’t around much because of the demands of his career. “My whole childhood, my dad was a workaholic,” she said in a 2018 interview with PEOPLE.
However, they were able to reconnect years later and work on their relationship.
She is a successful singer and songwriter

King is a highly successful singer-songwriter who has received four Grammy nominations and won various awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.
Her 2015 hit “Ex’s & Oh’s”, which served as the lead single from her debut album Love things, immediately launched her among the stars. People may also be familiar with some of her more recent songs, including “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” with Miranda Lambert and “Different for Girls,” a duet with Dierks Bentley.
On January 27, 2023, King released a country album: Come get your wife. On the album, King sings about motherhood in “Lucky” and her small-town roots in “Ohio.”
“I always asked myself, ‘What will my music sound like if I’m ever happy?’ And it’s the best music I’ve ever made,” King told PEOPLE of the album. “I feel so much joy in my life right now.”
She and Schneider rebuilt their relationship

Speaking to PEOPLE, King shared that she and her father were not close for much of her early life. Despite their strained past, Schneider and King were able to reconnect when she grew up.
The singer said that after a difficult year during which she left a “destructive” marriage and struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues, she and Schneider became closer. King also cited Schneider’s daughters, Miranda and Madeleine, as the reason they were able to bond.
“We’ve both grown up a lot. And you realize what’s important. He has kids — I wanted my sisters to have fond memories of me from their childhood when they grow up. Family really is so important,” she said. “So through that, me just showing up and trying to be good for them, it really made it easier because there was no ulterior motive. When it comes to kids, the bulls— kind of disappear. I love him.”
She added that she has no grudge against Schneider. “This business is hard. It’s hard to find any kind of balance in it. My dad just put everything into it — his success and trying to be successful,” she said. “I’m quite like that too. So my work, work has always been in the first place. But my family life is where I want it to be.”
Schneider says she’s “fiery” like him

In an interview with Fatherly 2020, Schneider spoke thoughtfully about all three of his daughters.
“They say kids are the best and the worst of you. It’s really true. The oldest is the most fiery, Elle. The funniest is the little one. The dreamer is my middle child. She sees the world as a dreamy beautiful place,” he shared.
She is engaged to tattoo artist Dan Tooker

King announced that she got engaged on her one-year anniversary to boyfriend Dan Tooker on October 9, 2020. The singer posted a picture on Instagram and explained in the caption that they both proposed to each other at the same time while on vacation in New Mexico.
“I had a ring in my pocket and I was going to throw it in the gold bowl and propose to @tattoker … but of course my soulmate overtook me and proposed the same way. So I immediately got down on my knee too,” she shared .
King spoke about her happy relationship with Tooker during an interview with PEOPLE, published in February 2023. “There was this electric thing that I had never felt before,” King said. “We hung out, laughed, then he tattooed me, and I posted a picture and said: “The next ex-husband is tattooing me.” We’ve been in love ever since.”
Two months later, King hinted at a possible break-up when she wore a jacket with “single” across the back at Stagecoach 2023. She then posted on Instagram about her “me yourself ni era”.
She announced that she was pregnant in March 2021

In March 2021, King revealed that she and Tooker were expecting their first child together. The “America’s Sweetheart” singer also got candid about her past pregnancy losses and how they affected her.
“This is something that I’ve not only wanted for as long as I can remember, but it’s something that I’ve struggled with for a very long time,” she told PEOPLE. “Going through the loss and going through that pain of losing two pregnancies, it feels like life is over, life is over. You have to go through this intense and really incredibly draining and shocking period of grieving.”
She continued: “I’m learning to be happy for myself. There’s a lot of anxiety about it, but it’s also very exciting.”
Schneider also had some sweet words for his daughter, which he shared on Instagram.
“Words are not enough to fully express how happy I am for you and Dan at the news of your child,” he wrote. “I know how much you wanted this and how deeply you love your family. For me it feels like just this morning I held you in my arms and saw those sparkling blue eyes of yours for the first time. I knew that there was a very beautiful and powerful soul that had just come to the world. And soon there will be another joy to see.”
She and Tooker welcomed a son in September 2021

King and Tooker welcomed their son Lucky Levi Tooker on September 1, 2021.
The singer shared the happy news on Instagram, alongside a photo of the couple holding their newborn, writing: “We are so proud to announce the birth of our son, Lucky Levi Tooker. We welcomed 8 lbs 1 oz of absolute joy on Wednesday, September 1 at 12:06 p.m. and love on earth.” She added: “We are all healthy and feeling so blessed! Welcome to the world Lucky!”
She later opened up about her journey to motherhood in an interview with PEOPLE in February 2023. “I’m a mother. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to be,” the singer said. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever been through, but I’m stronger than that. I shouldn’t have had kids with anyone but Daniel. I look at him like, ‘Thank God, you made it; you had babies with a good guy.’ ”
She was previously married to Andrew Ferguson

King secretly married Andrew Ferguson in February 2016, three weeks after they met and a week after announcing their engagement. She shared the news of their marriage and split in the same Instagram post, writing, “As we part ways and try to find our way through life, all I can hope for is that we both find happiness within ourselves. I love you. You will always have my heart. You will always be my first husband.”
In a later interview with PEOPLE, she opened up about her “destructive” relationship with Ferguson.
“I was in a destructive marriage. I was at the lowest point in my life. … I wasn’t well,” she said, “I couldn’t look people in the eye. I literally couldn’t leave my house for weeks at a time.”
The singer sought help from a PTSD specialist and leaned on friends and family, including Schneider. “I think reaching out saved my life. I don’t want to think about any other outcome that could have happened. I feel like the more I talk about it, maybe it can reach someone… reach someone who feels alone,” she said .

Ahead of her planned wedding to Ferguson, King appeared on TLC Say yes to the dresswhere she found her dream wedding dress.
“Mom said, ‘Honey, that’s it.’ I burst into ugly tears, and then we went out, I said yes to the dress, she came back, and mom was ugly crying, so I knew it was really ‘the the,’ she said of the experience.
She got her first tattoo at the age of 14

The rocker started getting tattoos when she was just 14 years old to embrace her body.
“When I was a little girl…I felt uncomfortable, so I would look in the mirror and I didn’t feel beautiful,” she added to PEOPLE in 2016 that body art helped her gain more self-confidence.
“When I was younger, I started getting tattoos and that’s how I kind of learned to find beauty in the diversity of the world because I don’t look like most people,” she said. “I don’t sing, walk, talk, act like anybody else. That’s what I think is beautiful: People who stand out. Because if we all looked the same, I think the world would be a really boring place.”

In June 2023, King hosted the 50th annual CMA Fest alongside Dierks Bentley and Lainey Wilson.
“Still can’t believe how amazing #CMAfest was! Cheers to 50 years! Thank you for another unforgettable ❤️🔥🤠❤️,” the “Without You” singer wrote on Instagram.
She performed “charged” during the Dolly Parton tribute show
King faced backlash after she performed “f—ing hammered” during a Dolly Parton tribute show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in January 2024. The singer hurled insults at fans from the stage and reportedly cursed more than a dozen times at the family event.
