Loren and Ponti welcomed their first child, son Carlo Ponti Jr., on December 29, 1968, in Geneva, Switzerland. Shortly after he was born, the couple introduced him to the world in 1969.

“I think it was about a week after Carl Jr. was born,” Loren recalled to PEOPLE of the famous picture of a crowd of reporters snapping photos of Loren and her baby in the hospital room. “There were so many photographers that we couldn’t give just one.”

“The doctor said, ‘We have a room where we operate, and there’s a balcony everywhere. You can come in with the child and they can take pictures,'” she recalled.

Loren once described Carlos Jr. to PEOPLE as “a little bit like me.” Some of the characteristics she used to describe him were “shy, keeps things to himself, laughs” and “is funny”. When speaking with Turner Classic Movies 2021, Carlos Jr. looked back on his childhood and his mother’s fame.

Loren and Ponti welcomed their second child, a son, Edoardo Ponti, on January 6, 1973, in Geneva, Switzerland. While the Italian star compared Carl Jr. with herself, she said that Edoardo is similar to her sister Maria Scicolone.
