Sophia Loren is not only one of the biggest names in Hollywood; she is also a proud mom.

The Italian star had two sons, Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti, with his late husband, film producer Carlo Ponti, who died in January 2007.

Both of Loren’s sons have carved out successful careers in the entertainment industry, with Edoardo similarly following in the footsteps of his film-focused parents. Carlo Jr. he continued his musical career and is an accomplished orchestral conductor working in the United States.

The actress’ rep told PEOPLE that the incident occurred on Sept. 24 in the bathroom of her Geneva home, and that she suffered several fractures, including a femur and hip. However, the representative added that they are optimistic about Loren’s recovery.

Loren and Ponti welcomed their first child, son Carlo Ponti Jr., on December 29, 1968, in Geneva, Switzerland. Shortly after he was born, the couple introduced him to the world in 1969.

“I think it was about a week after Carl Jr. was born,” Loren recalled to PEOPLE of the famous picture of a crowd of reporters snapping photos of Loren and her baby in the hospital room. “There were so many photographers that we couldn’t give just one.”

“The doctor said, ‘We have a room where we operate, and there’s a balcony everywhere. You can come in with the child and they can take pictures,'” she recalled.

Loren once described Carlos Jr. to PEOPLE as “a little bit like me.” Some of the characteristics she used to describe him were “shy, keeps things to himself, laughs” and “is funny”. When speaking with Turner Classic Movies 2021, Carlos Jr. looked back on his childhood and his mother’s fame.

“I don’t actually remember when I realized my mother was a legendary movie icon,” Carlo Jr. said. in the recording. “I think I was able to gradually pick it up as I got older because we had some famous actors come to visit us,” citing Sylvester Stallone in the 1970s as an example.

Carlo Jr. he became a music director, which Loren once told PEOPLE he’s “doing very well.” Although he is Italian, he is currently based in the United States. He worked at the Conductor’s Institute in Connecticut, later he lived in Los Angeles and trained at the music academy in Vienna, Austria.

Carlo Jr. he married the musician Andrea Meszaros in 2004. A musician in her own right, Meszaros studied at the Vienna Academy of Music where she received a classical violin education. Loren and Ponti welcomed their second child, a son, Edoardo Ponti, on January 6, 1973, in Geneva, Switzerland. While the Italian star compared Carl Jr. with herself, she said that Edoardo is similar to her sister Maria Scicolone.

“Edoardo is like my sister,” she once told PEOPLE, noting that he is “friendly” and “sings very well.” Additionally, she noted that he “wants to be a director,” which is exactly what he became when he grew up.
