Ally Brooke Says Simon Cowell Called Her the ‘Glue’ of Fifth Harmony: ‘It Was Like a Crown That He Was Giving Me’

Fifth Harmony alumna Ally Brooke reflects on the early days of the girl group’s time together.

During an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of Keke Palmer’s Honey, this is Keke Palmer podcast, Brooke, 30, revealed that Simon Cowell — one of the The X factor judges who were responsible for forming the group — told her that she was one of the most important pieces of the puzzle for the group’s success.

“After we were formed, Simon pulled me aside and said, ‘You’re the glue that holds the group together,'” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, what?’ Like, it was so amazing what he said and it was so… it was like a crown he was giving me.”

Asked by Palmer, 30, how the Syco Records executive knew she would be the “glue”, Brooke said Cowell took into account both her age and the group’s dynamic.

“I think he just saw that in me, and probably because I was older, he saw me throughout the competition,” she said. “He saw my tenacity and the way I held myself, and then the fact that I was older. All that.”

Elsewhere in the interview, host Palmer asked Brooke about the dynamic that emerged between the girls later in the band’s history, as fans picked favorites and put their own personas on each of the members.

“That was really hard, because, you know, you just want to be yourself and you want to be represented, and sometimes that wasn’t the case,” Brooke recalled. “I remember our first single – I had one line, literally one line, and I was like… it was three words or something, and I was so humbled.”

“People were commenting online, ‘Oh, Ally wasn’t good enough’ or whatever, and it must have been hard at first because … you want to be out there and you want to be seen,” she continued. “But eventually it faded and I feel like everyone got their moment to shine.”
