Amanda Bynes’ Bleph Surgery ‘Looks Natural’, Says a Plastic Surgeon — Here’s What to Know About the Procedure

Earlier this week, Amanda Bynes posted a video on TikTok revealing that she had undergone blepharoplasty — a procedure to remove excess eyelid skin. The former child star, 37, told her followers on social media that the finished product has boosted her confidence.

“It was one of the best things I could have ever done for my confidence and it made me feel so much better in my own skin, so I just wanted to post about it just to clear up the rumors about why I had a new look,” the Hair spray said the actress. “Now I feel much better and I am glad that I had the blepharoplasty operation. It was one of the greatest things I could have ever done.”

Bynes’ “new look” has since sparked a lot of curiosity about the procedure. PEOPLE recently spoke with plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Lee, a blepharoplasty specialist and CEO of Wave Plastic Surgery, to find out more.

“I think her results are excellent!” Lee, who did not treat Bynes, tells PEOPLE. “It looks natural and it definitely gave her a fresher look. The important element is that it doesn’t change who you are, it just restores a youthful version of yourself.”

What is blepharoplasty?

“As we age, the skin of the upper eyelid relaxes and descends over the eyes. This is especially true in the outer corners of the eye, resulting in a more tired and sad look,” explains Lee. “Upper blepharoplasty, commonly called eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at rejuvenating the upper eyelid region. It involves removing excess skin, fat and sometimes muscle to create a more youthful and vibrant appearance.”

How is the procedure performed?

“The procedure usually begins by making an incision along the natural fold of the upper eyelid and cutting away excess skin, prominent fat, and muscle,” says Lee. “The goal is to naturally restore the upper eyelid to its youthful state. The operation usually takes about an hour, with a recovery time of 2 weeks, the stitches are removed between 5 and 10 days after the operation.”

What are some of the risks?

“Upper blepharoplasty is generally well tolerated,” Lee tells PEOPLE. “Although rare, some risks and complications may occur, such as bleeding, infection, dry eyes, corneal irritation, lagophthalmos or difficulty closing the eyelids, asymmetry, skin changes, scarring, visual disturbance, or the need for additional or revision surgery. ”

What is the average price of blepharoplasty?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of blepharoplasty is $3,339, not including anesthesia, operating room facilities, or other related costs.

“The cost of upper blepharoplasty varies depending on the region, the expertise of the surgeon, the individual situation/condition of the patient and the complexity of the procedure required,” explains Lee.
