Ameen Sayani was a famous former radio announcer who achieved fame and popularity across the Indian subcontinent with his show Binaca Geetmala. He died at the age of 91 on February 20, 2024 in Mumbai after a heart attack.
The news of his death was announced by his son Rajil Sayani to Indianexpress.com. His funeral was held on February 22, 2024 as his family was waiting for some relatives to arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Ameen Sayani suffered a heart attack on February 20, 2024 at night and was then rushed to HN Reliance Hospital where he died. His son said,
“Doctors at the hospital examined him but could not save him and he was pronounced dead.”

Ameen Sayani was married to Rama Mattoo who is a Kashmiri Pandit. They got married in 1963. Ameen and Rama became the parents of a son, Rajil Sayani, who is a radio presenter and announcer.

Ameen Sayani’s wife played a very important role in his life as her support served as his motivation.
Ameen started suffering from various health problems such as diabetes, kidney failure and heart problems. In 2003, he underwent bypass surgery and lost his sight due to glaucoma.
On February 19, 2024, he was admitted to the hospital after experiencing chest pain. He suffered a heart attack and died in hospital.
Ameen Sayani is survived by his wife Rama Mattoo, his son Rajil, his daughter-in-law and his grandson.
Ameen left behind an estimated net worth of around INR 3 crore to his wife and son after his death. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2009 and Golden Abb, Kaan Hall of Fame Award, Living Legend Award, Hindi Ratna Puraskar and Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1992, he was included in the Book of Records of Limca as person of the year.
Ameen Sayani was born on 21 December 1932 in Mumbai to Jan Mohamed Sayani (father) and Kulsum Sayani (mother).
Ameen’s father was a politician and lawyer, while his mother was a social activist and journalist. He had three siblings, including an elder brother Hamid Sayani who was a radio host who mentored him.
As a child, Ameend helped his mother in the printing, publishing and editing of her magazine Rehber from 1940 to 1960. He completed his higher secondary education in St. Xavier’s High School, Fort, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954 from the College of St. Xavier in Mumbai.
