Amelia Gray Hamlin Talks Her Love of ‘Iconic’ Flip Phones and How to Take The Perfect Selfie (Exclusive)

As a young child, Amelia Gray Hamlin definitely owned one thing: a Motorola Razr flip phone.

“It was literally the first phone I used to text,” the model tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I vividly remember sitting on the floor in my parents’ bedroom and pressing [a button on the keypad] several times to get to the letter of my choice,” she recalls chatting with her friends the old-fashioned way.

Now Hamlin, 22, has decided to go back to her roots and team up with Motorola to welcome her Razr+ phone, a reimagined version of the 2004 original.

“For me, and I think for most people in my generation, the Razr was, and still is, such an iconic statement. It was part of my childhood and my early adolescence,” she says of why she decided to work with the tech company after its new launch. “There’s a nostalgia behind it, which is really special.”

The new and improved Motorola foldable smartphone brings back everything that was there in the beginning, but with a more modern silhouette. It is available in three vivid futuristic colors including Glacial Blue, Infinite Black and Viva Magenta, Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year.

Of the phone’s high-tech features — including its impressive sound system, Flex View design (which allows the device to stand on its own at multiple angles) and long-lasting battery — Hamlin’s favorite is the high-definition camera, which includes a photo booth option that collages four photos taken with the front lens.

Hamlin admits that she’s not “the biggest selfie girl” and instead likes to take pictures of herself in the mirror (and a scroll through her Instagram feed also shows that she likes to snap outfit photos backstage at the fashion shows she’s walked in).

“But,” she notes, “if you’re going to do the OG selfie, it’s really all about lighting and angles. It’s about learning what works for you. Get to know your face, that’s how you’ll make a good selfie.”

The flip phone is just one of the Y2K accessories Hamlin wants to see thrive again. (The trendsetter even styled the icy blue Razr+ with a Marc Jacobs look at this year’s Glamor Women of the Year red carpet event.)

She also tells PEOPLE that she hopes rope chokers will come back into fashion. “I’m already bringing it back as we speak actually,” she says, noting that her clothing growing up was “very Hot Topic-esque.”

It shows that Hamlin enjoyed questioning aesthetics as an adult and on her own terms.

“It was a lot of fun exploring those trends as the person I am today and with the freedom I have. I think trends are about timing and where you are in your life when they happen,” she says.

There are really no tailoring limits for Hamlin, who adds that she would experiment with every whim in the book if she could. “I think it’s fun to try to incorporate as much as you can into your everyday life.”

Her habit of jumping from trend to trend fits perfectly with her “chaotic” approach to dressing.

“I always manage my style. i’m a gemini I feel like I know myself too well, but then I feel like I don’t know myself at all. It’s just constant identity crisis after identity crisis.”

And realizing it all in the spotlight — a status attributed to her catwalk prowess and her famous parents, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin — only encouraged her to step outside the box.

“I’m definitely doing myself. If anything, it makes me explore outside of my comfort zone. It’s always fun to never be comfortable with yourself.”
