American Horror Stories actor Gavin Creel dies aged 48 just two months after he’s diagnosed with cancer

AMERICAN HORROR STORY star Gavin Creel has died aged 48, just two months after being diagnosed with cancer.

In July, Creel discovered he had metastatic melanotic sarcoma of the peripheral nerve sheath — a rare type of cancer that forms in connective tissue such as bone and muscle.

He was being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York after the devastating diagnosis, but was transferred to hospice care before he died.

Creel appeared on Broadway and received a Tony Award nomination after his debut as the lead in the 2002 production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

He received a further nomination for his performance in the 2009 revival of Hair before receiving a Laurence Olivier Award for his portrayal of Elder Price in the West End version of The Book of Mormon.

After returning to Broadway in 2016’s She Loves Me, Creel won a 2017 Tony Award for his featured role in that year’s revival of Hello, Dolly!

His last acting role in the US was in the acclaimed production of Into the Woods in 2022.

But Creel is perhaps best known to a wider audience for his TV roles.

Creel was seen in two episodes of the first season of the US hit series American Horror Story.

Born on April 18, 1976, Creel attended the University of Michigan’s prestigious musical theater program, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998.

He dedicated his Tony Award win to a program that had a profound impact on his life.

“My education there as a young person changed my life forever,” Creel said during his Tony acceptance speech.

Heartbroken fans have now paid tribute to the actor.

“I am so devastated for Gavin Creel. I remember spending so many days in my room listening and singing along to revivals of Pippin and Hair, TMM and so many other shows that kept my love of musicals alive,” wrote one fan on X.

“Gavin Creel was an amazingly talented performer but an even better person. Every time I met him and spoke to him he was so genuine and kind, I can’t believe he’s passed,” said another.

“Shocked by the news of Gavin Creel’s death. Such a great talent, gone too soon. I loved him in Into the Woods, but my favorite performance will always be this,” said someone else.

Another wrote: “Honestly broken Gavin Creel was one of the greatest men in contemporary musical theatre.”

A third posted: “Absolute all time player… we were so, so lucky to have Gavin Creel.”
