Political career
Amit started his political career in 2016 by joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). In 2017, he contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Bathinda Rural but failed to win and lost to AAP Rupinder Kaur Ruby by 10,718 votes. In 2020, he was expelled from SAD for cheating. In January 2022, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party as a candidate from Bathinda Rural. In the same year, he won the elections to the Punjab Legislative Assembly and became the MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party in Bathinda Panchayat.

In 2023, Amit was involved in a controversy and he was arrested by the Bathinda Vigilance Bureau on February 23, 2023 in connection with a bribery case. Amit’s arrest comes a week after his close aide Rahim Garg was arrested on February 16 in the same case. Pritpal Kumar, husband of Sarpanch of Ghudda village, complained to the police about Garg and Amit demanding Rs. bribe, following which he was arrested. Rs 400,000 was released and Rs 25 lakh was allocated for development works in Ghudda village. Garg was arrested by Vigilance Bureau officials while he was accepting Rs. In a government-owned hotel, there were 2,000 banknotes and Kotfata was present. Amit denied any contact with Garg at the time, but the complainant posted an audio clip of a conversation between Kumar, Amit and Garg on social media, in which Amit asked Kumar for money. Amit’s arrest was reportedly approved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He said in a Twitter post,
Bribery by anyone in any form will not be tolerated. My spirits are lifted by the faith, love and expectations of the people of Punjab. There will be no mercy for those who “eat” people’s money. The law is equal to all. ”

- Amit uses the prefix “Engineer” before his name on his social media pages.
- In 2020, many farmers in Bathinda rural constituency accused him of cheating them, but the police did not file a case against him. He is also accused of deceiving his own party workers, promising them business opportunities but failing to deliver. Therefore, he was expelled from SAD.
- In 2022, AAP announced him as the party’s candidate, but many AAP founding members in Punjab did not like the decision and even wrote to Arvind Kejriwal to review the candidate.
- In 2022, when Amit was preparing to contest elections, members of the Sangat block of Bharti Kisan Union Ekta Ugrahan sat in front of Amit’s house to protest against his failure to donate money to the youth who had helped him complete a survey in 2017.
- Later in 2022, Amit was also accused of running a company that took money from young people without providing them with jobs. A complaint against him has been sent to the Inspector General of Police, Bathinda. Amit claimed that all the accusations were false and there was no evidence against him.
