Amit Shah is a famous Indian politician. He is the current Home Minister of India, Chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Member of Lok Sabha. He is a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He rose to prominence in 2014 for managing the BJP’s campaign in Uttar Pradesh. He studied biochemistry from CU Shah College of Science, Ahmedabad. After college, he worked in his father’s PVC pipe company. Amit Shah also worked as a stockbroker at Ahmedabad Cooperative Bank.

His father Anilchandra Shah was a businessman from Mansa, Gujarat. His mother Kusumben Shah was a housewife. He had six sisters, including Rajeshwariben (eldest daughter) and Aarthi Shah; Rajeshwariben died on January 15, 2024, while undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital. Amit Shah joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a volunteer (Swayamsevak) at the age of 14 and participated in RSS events and activities. He joined the RSS and became a member while he was in college in Ahmedabad. Because he was deeply inspired by the nationalist views and spirit of the RSS. In 1982, he met Narendra Modi through the RSS social circle in Ahmedabad.
In 1983, he became the leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP; student wing of the RSS). He served as ABVP leader for four years, during which time the political wing of the RSS, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was formed. In 1984, Amit Shah became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. As a member of the BJP, his first assignment was as a poll agent in Naranpura constituency in Ahmedabad. After completing his mission, he was appointed as treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJYM). Eventually, he was promoted to state secretary and vice-president of the Gujarat BJP. Over the years, he has handled several sports and movements such as Ram Janambhoomi Movement and Ekta Yatra. He successfully handled these movements and made the people of Gujarat support the BJP. This also earned him the opportunity to handle and manage LK Advani’s campaign for the 1989 Lok Sabha elections from Ahmedabad constituency. He successfully managed campaigns for the next two decades until the 2009 election. Amit Shah also managed the campaign of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he contested from Gandhinagar.
In 1995, he contested the Gujarat Assembly elections and won from the Sarkhej Lok Sabha constituency. He was appointed Chairman of the Gujarat Financial Corporation; he managed it very efficiently and it was listed on the stock exchange. However, the PPP’s term ended in just two years in 1997, but Amit Shah had already risen to prominence. The people of Gujarat support and trust him. It is understood that people in the constituency can contact him at any time if they have any questions, which makes him popular among the masses. In 2000, Narendra Modi was elected chief minister of Gujarat; the Bharatiya Janata Party ousted Keshubhai Patel over complaints of ineffective governance. In 2002, Amit Shah won his third consecutive parliamentary election and Narendra Modi appointed him as a cabinet minister. Amit Shah is the youngest minister in the cabinet. In the 2019 general elections, he contested from Gandhinagar constituency in Gujarat and defeated Congress party CJ Chavda by a margin of 5,57,014 votes. On May 30, 2019, Amit Shah was sworn in as a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government under the auspices of President Ram Nath Kovind and served as the Home Minister of India.
He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Gandhinagar constituency in Gujarat and won by 7,44,716 votes. On June 9, 2024, he was sworn in as a cabinet minister in the Modi 3.0 government.

- Amit Shah is accused of destroying evidence and influencing witnesses in the 2002 Gurjat riots; which resulted in the deaths of around 1,000 Muslims.
- Shah was embroiled in the pryinggate scandal in Gujarat. He was accused of spying on a woman in connection with the Ishrat Jahan encounter. Ishrat Jahan, a 19-year-old girl, met three other people on the outskirts of Gujarat state who were accused of being terrorists and planning to assassinate Narendra Modi.
- In 2010, Amit Shah was accused of plotting to impersonate local criminal Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi and associate Tulsiram Tulsiram Prajapati’s encounter with the police. The case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Central Bureau of Investigation said Sohrabuddin extorted money from Gujarati businessmen who collectively paid Amit Shah to eliminate Sohrabuddin. Amit Shah and some policemen planned to kill Sohrabuddin. However, Amit Shah claimed that he was innocent and that the charges against him were politically motivated. He accused the Congress of using IBI for political gain. The Gujarat police chief said the CBI pressured him to implicate Shah in the case. Amit Shah was later cleared in 2014.
- On July 25, 2010, he was arrested in connection with the Sohrabuddin case. He applied for bail and three months later, the Gujarat High Court granted him bail on October 29, 2010. On October 30, 2019, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation expressed concern over Shah’s use of political power to influence people and obstruct justice. This led to the Gujarat High Court banning him from entering the state from 2010 to 2012. In September 2012, Shah appealed the ruling of the Gujarat High Court to the Supreme Court, after which he was granted bail and allowed to return to Gujarat.
- In 2017, after Narendra Modi became prime minister and Amit Shah became president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, his son Jai Shah’s company was said to have grown 16,000 times in just one year growth.
