Andie MacDowell Knows There Wouldn't Be So Much 'Interest and Curiosity' in Her Gray Hair If She Were a Man

Andie MacDowell’s gray hair seems to be the talk of the town all the time.

First, I would like you to know that it is silver, not gray.

Secondly, she would like you to know that this would not be the case if she were not a woman.

“It’s fascinating to me that it’s such a curiosity and interest from people,” MacDowell, 65, told NewBeauty in a March 19 cover story about the continued fascination with her hair. “I also think it’s important to stop and think about that interest and curiosity — because it wouldn’t happen if I were a man. It’s happening because I’m a woman. We have to look at that. We have to look at why there’s interest in having silver hair, because if I were a man, there wouldn’t be any doubt that I had silver hair, right?”

Andie MacDowell opens up about embracing her ‘badass’ gray hair: ‘I’m a silver fox’

Despite all the chatter about her silver hair, MacDowell loves it and wouldn’t have it any other way, she told the outlet. In fact, she said she would have been happy if she had gone gray sooner, but she was “scared”.

“I finally found courage during COVID when I saw it with my own eyes and skin color,” she said. “When it grew out, I could see what color it was going to be and I really liked it. I knew it was time.”

MacDowell told PEOPLE in 2022 that her sister inspired her when it came to letting her hair go silver. “”My sister is silver and only 18 months older than me. I thought it looked much nicer as silver. I was jealous – she said.

Andie MacDowell ‘really comfortable’ with her gray hair: I’ve wanted to do it ‘for a while’

The L’Oréal Paris ambassador, who has worked with the legendary beauty brand for four decades, also told PEOPLE last November that she’s overwhelmed with gratitude for the love she’s received, simply because she’s let her hair do its natural thing.

“I knew instinctively that it was something I wanted to do. I’m so grateful that L’Oréal Paris has supported me and that everyone has been so good to me and positive. The response has been really good,” the mom of three told PEOPLE at the L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Gala in Los Angeles in November. “I’m just grateful that people let me be the person I am without question. I think people also agree that silver hair probably suits me.”
