We live in time on Friday, Sept. 6, Garfield referred to the film’s director John Crowley as he spoke about “a collection of experiences that he goes through in life — personal experience, personal loss, personal love.”

“I think we were fortunate enough to be able to bring all that private personal stuff into this in ways that were healing for us and hopefully for the audience,” he said.

“There was a really solid foundation, and in terms of preparing for the details, it feels like what Florence mentioned before, it feels like one of those movies where you kind of don’t want to know what the scene is going to be,” Garfield added during a post-screening interview.

“You kind of don’t want to know what the next shot is going to be. And that can only happen if you have a scene partner that you can just pay attention to and tune in and listen to and know that you’re going to end up in the most honest, authentic place with, which is Florence, and that’s rare.”

We live in time marks Garfield’s first feature film role since 2021, when he memorably reprized his own Spider-Man role in There’s no way home and portrayed the late composer Jonathan Larson in tick, tick… BOOM! In the new romantic drama, he plays Tobias, while Pugh portrays Almut.

“I think for me there was a kind of surrender that wanted to happen in this movie more than most other movies I’ve done and a trust and a kind of letting go,” Garfield added while watching the film at the premiere. “I think that’s a theme in the movie and I was so moved watching it, there were moments tonight that moved me in a way I hadn’t been moved before.”

We live in time it’s in theaters on October 11.
