Angelina Jolie Becomes Opera Singer Maria Callas in First Photos from Director Pablo Larraín’s Maria

Angelina Jolie is getting ready for her next role.

First views of Mariaan upcoming biopic featuring the Oscar winner, 48, as opera star Maria Callas was revealed on Monday.

Based on the true stories of Callas, Maria will tell “the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined during her final days in Paris in the 1970s,” according to a press release.

Two new photos show Jolie as an American-born Greek opera diva. In one he wears large, round glasses; in the other a wide-brimmed lace hat.

Mariawritten by Steven Knight before the Hollywood WGA strike and given a temporary SAG-AFTRA contract, is the latest biopic from director Pablo Larraín.

His previous films Spencer and Jackie it featured performances from Oscar-nominated Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and Natalie Portman as former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. His latest film, El Conde, premiered at the Venice Film Festival 2023.

Larraín said in a statement: “I am incredibly excited to begin production Mariawhich I hope will bring the extraordinary life and work of Maria Callas to audiences around the world, thanks to Steven Knight’s magnificent script, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation.”

“I take the responsibility of Mary’s life and legacy very seriously. I will do everything I can to meet the challenge,” Jolie said in a previous statement.

Callas had a vocal range of three octaves, which made her an international opera star. She died in Paris in 1977 from a heart attack, writes The Guardian.

The filming of Maria will take place over eight weeks in Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan. It will feature original clothing items worn by Callas, according to a press release.

The film marks Jolie’s return to the big screen after starring in 2021 Eternals.

At the film’s premiere, she told PEOPLE that her six children are excited to see her make her Marvel debut. “What really touches me is that they want to see me strong, so they see less of me in the movie, but they are happy that I will be strong and have fun,” said the actress.

In an interview with Vogue last month, Jolie said she was “in transition as a person,” adding, “I’m feeling a little down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade.”

She revealed that seven years ago she deliberately started filming fewer film roles, “only jobs that don’t require long shoots”.
