News about Angus Taylor
Angus Taylor was heralded as a guy to watch and a potential prime minister when he was elected to the federal parliament in 2013. Predicting who will succeed in the volatile realm of politics is risky. Taylor struggled to stand out from the crowd of ambitious men (and a few women) in their forties in the Liberal Party. Ego, self-promotion, the ability to woo colleagues, and the ability to get the hang of it in 10 seconds can be far more important than intellect or a brilliant resume.
Now, much like those mentioned by Lemony Snicket, a series of unfortunate events could have cruelly reduced Taylor’s chances, even if he had managed to convince his colleagues that he possessed the requisite qualities. Taylor’s reputation has been tarnished by “Watergate”, “Grassgate” and, more recently, the controversies surrounding the forged documents, which have been exposed by The Guardian over the past six months.
No leader would want the controversy to result in such significant embarrassment to the Morrison administration. However, they also cast doubt on Taylor’s political leanings and judgment. Overall, he reacted with an arrogance that may have blinded him to how the public viewed his actions.
Tall, attractive, courteous, intelligent and well-connected, Taylor was elected as a Liberal in the NSW Southern Highlands seat for Hume in 2013 with the support of Nationals, even though they had controlled the seat for a long time.
Since Taylor came from a well-established pastoral family on the nearby Monaro Plains, he seemed able to balance the interests of both coalition partners. Sir William Hudson, his grandfather, is responsible for the development of the Snow Mountain Hydroelectric Project.
Taylor had excellent business connections but was also financially dry with a blue blood private school history that included Parramatta Royal School, St Andrews College, Sydney University and Oxford.
In addition to economics, he studied law at the University of Sydney, where he received university gold. He traveled to Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship, where he earned a master’s degree in economics while rowing for New College. He later was hired by the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he served clients such as Rio Tinto and several notable agribusinesses.
