Anil Chauhan is a three-star general in the Indian Army who retired in May 2021. After the death of India’s first Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat in September 2022, the Indian government appointed him as the second Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) in December 2021.

Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was born on Thursday, May 18, 1961 in Guana village, Pauri Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh (now in Uttarakhand) (age 61 years; as of 2022 Year). After completing his studies at Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), Williamsburg, Kolkata, Anil Chauhan passed the UPSC examination in 1977 and joined the National Defense Academy (NDA). After three years of training in the NDA, Anil Chauhan joined the Indian Army. In 1980, he entered the Academy (IMA) and completed his training in 1981 and enlisted in the 11th Gurkha Rifles (11 GR).

Anil Chauhan began his career as an officer in the Indian Army on June 13, 1981 when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 11th Gurkha Rifles. Soon after joining the army, Anil Chauhan attended the Young Officers (YO) course and the Commando Course in Belgaum. Karnataka. On June 13, 1983, Anil Chauhan was promoted to Lieutenant. On June 13, 1986, he became a Captain and on June 13, 1992, Anil Chauhan became a Major and was subsequently appointed as the Battalion Commander. On December 16, 2004, Anil Chauhan was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. As a Lieutenant Colonel, he served as the Deputy Commander of the 11th Gurkha Rifles Battalion. On 1 October 2005, Anil Chauhan was promoted to Colonel and subsequently commanded a battalion of the 11th Gurkha Rifles. On June 1, 2009, Anil Chauhan was promoted to Brigadier General and subsequently appointed as the Commanding Officer, 11 Gurkha Rifles Centre, Lucknow. After completing his tenure as Center Commander, Gorkha Regiment, he was posted to the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV) to look after the welfare of retired soldiers of the Indian Army. On January 1, 2014, Anil Chauhan was promoted to Major General and subsequently posted to the 15 Corps of the Indian Army (also known as Chinar Corps) in Kashmir. He served as chief of staff there until 2015. After serving as Chief of Staff, Anil Chauhan was posted to the 19th Infantry Division in Baramulla, Kashmir, as the Divisional Commander (GOC). On July 1, 2016, Anil Chauhan was promoted from the rank of major general to the rank of lieutenant general.

From 2017 to 2018, Anil Chauhan served as the Commander-in-Chief (GOC) of the 3rd Army based in Nagaland, which was under the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.

In 2018, Anil Chauhan was appointed as the Director of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). According to multiple sources, Anil Chauhan played a crucial role in the planning of the Indian Air Force’s 2019 Balakot air strike. That same year, as Governor General, Anil Chauhan oversaw the planning and execution of Operation Sunrise, a joint military operation between the Indian Army and the Myanmar Army against the Naga rebels in Myanmar. He served as the Commander-in-Chief until 2019, after which Anil Chauhan took over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command and served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) until his retirement in May 2021.

In May 2021, after retiring from the Indian Army as a Lieutenant General, Anil Chauhan was appointed as Military Advisor by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) to work alongside National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval Until September 2022.
Chief of Defense Staff (CDS)
The position of CDS was created by the Indian government led by Narendra Modi in 2019, and the government subsequently appointed former Indian Army Chief of Staff General Bipin Rawat as India’s first CDS in 2020; however, in December 2021, Bipin The post of CDS remained vacant for about ten months after Rawat died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu. On September 28, 2022, the Indian government announced that Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan will become India’s second CDS. His term as the country’s CDS will begin on September 30, 2022. According to the Ministry of Defense (MoD), he will not only serve as CDS but also as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs (DMA). The UK Ministry of Defense said in its official statement,
The government has decided to appoint Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan (retd) as the next Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) who will also hold the additional charge of Secretary to the Government of India under the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) from the date of appointment. He will bear the charge till The Government of India (GoI) issued further orders. “
