The Santa Barbara-based company just raised its $2 million “Calculated” development cost, with the remaining $45 million of the production budget coming from bank financing.
Known worldwide for her screenplays, Peacock received a Primetime Emmy in 1999 for her screenplay for “A Lesson Before Dying” for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie. Peacock’s script for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” was also recognized by the industry. Don Steele, Artists First and CAA represented Peacock.
The International Thriller Writers (ITW) Award for Best Young Adult Novel 2022 recently shortlisted “Calculated,” the first book in Wolfpack’s popular young adult action-adventure thriller series.
According to OneDoor Studios CEO Jay Brents, Peacock’s work on the first part of the Narnia series and her strong connection to the story and characters of “Calculated” were key factors in his decision to cast her as a writer for the project.
“I greatly appreciate Ann Peacock’s ability to translate the first book in CS Lewis’s Narnia trilogy to the big screen. We couldn’t be happier, said Brents, “Ann is one of the best in the business to have pulled this off for ‘Calculated.’ Adapting a novel for the screen requires not only talent but also a certain kind of sensitivity.
Peacock claimed that Josephine Rivers, the book’s protagonist, and the setting in Shanghai drew her to the project. I love the idea behind the book: a girl who is kidnapped from her family and sold into slavery because she has superpowers, and then has to use creativity to find her way home, according to Peacock. “I love the overall message, which is to put your talent to good use.
I love that our heroine is up against a fantastic main villain who happens to be a woman: the head of a major human trafficking organization. I love that she is set in Shanghai, the most fascinating city in terms of architecture and culture. And I love the way it all compiles into one exciting action thriller. Oh, and let’s not neglect the beautiful love story.
“I was really looking forward to meeting Ann Peacock because I love her work on ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,’ but I was completely impressed with her understanding of ‘Calculated’ and the character of Jo Rivers. “I’m excited to see her adapt this story to the big screen because she’s embraced it on every level,” added McBee.
OneDoor Studios is expected to complete the film’s script in September 2023. Production on the film will begin in January 2024, and “Calculated” will be released in April 2025.
