Anna Delvey Had to 'Request ICE for Permission' to Compete on Dancing with the Stars (Exclusive)

Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorkin, became famous for posing as a wealthy German heiress and using her social position to defraud wealthy people, banks and hotels. She was arrested in 2017 and convicted of aggravated theft in the first, second and third degree and theft of services in 2019.

Her sentence included four to 12 years in prison — which was shortened when she was released in February 2021 for good behavior. Shortly after her release, Delvey was taken into custody by ICE for violating the terms of her visa. She was living under house arrest in New York while she fought her deportation case.

“Good, [DWTS] she reached out to her team and I had to get permission from ICE to travel out of state because it’s filming in Los Angeles and I’m in New York,” she told PEOPLE of how her engagement came about. “It took them about 10 days. for it to go through the system and for everything to be approved.”

“By the time I got approved, it was very close to launch day so I flew out to LA almost the next day and I just decided why not?” Delvey recalled.

When asked about facing potential backlash over her controversial casting, Devley said: “It’s just not that serious. If someone is that upset about the casting of a dance show, I don’t know what to say.”

Delvey will continue to compete alongside his partner Ezra Sosa Dancing with the stars provided he continues to wear the ankle monitor. She said The Hollywood Reporter that her device would not interfere with her ability to perform.

“How would that affect my performance? It’s actually quite light,” she said.

On September 4, Good morning America announced the other members who will be joining Delvey this season. Celebrity contestants include: Phaedra Parks, Eric Roberts, Tori Spelling, Dwight Howard, Brooks Nader, Joey Graziadei, Jenn Tran, Chandler Kinney, Stephen Nedoroscik, Reginald VelJohnson and others.
