Anne Hathaway and her husband Adam Shulman aren’t always in sync when it comes to their dating plans.
During the performance at Living with Kelly and Mark on Monday, the actress, 41, recounted the time she and Shulman, 42, had what she described as a “never again” date.
She told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that she and Shulman — who married in 2012 — were celebrating nine years of marriage together in 2021 with a romantic getaway to a spa hotel when things went wrong.
“It was our ninth wedding anniversary, and Adam did something great. He booked us a few nights at a spa hotel,” she explained. “It was beautiful – beautiful but, you know, kind of a crunchy place.”
Hathaway said she happened to see a flyer for a sauerkraut workshop at the hotel.
“It’s ‘never again’ for me just listening to it!” Ripa, 53, jokingly interjected.
When Eileen the star excitedly pitched her idea to Shulman, who immediately rejected it. “I said, ‘Honey, ooo, sauerkraut workshop!’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah, no, why should we?’ ” she recalled.
However, she was not swayed and tried to win him over. “I thought, ‘No, no, it’s going to be good for us. It’s a probiotic, we’re preparing our lives for the future,'” she said of learning a useful new culinary skill.
“And he said, ‘I’m going to go over and take a nap,'” she added, before revealing that she ended up going to the workshop alone. While there, she made a jar of sauerkraut that needed to ferment for four weeks before it would be ready to eat.

Hathaway brought the fruits of her labor as a gift for Shulman. “I gave it back to Adam and he was waking up from his nap looking very rested and I said, ‘Happy anniversary!’ ” she told.
“And he said, ‘What’s that smell?’ And I said, ‘Our life for the next four weeks,'” she concluded, laughing.
The Oscar winner also told Live audience that she and Shulman often have daily non-anniversary meetings now that they are parents to two children, sons Jonathan, 7, and Jack, 4.
“Sometimes on dates I just feel like I’m sitting,” she said. “When you have two little kids, they just sit and, like, look at each other, they know you don’t have to say anything, and that’s good.”

Anne Hathaway describes her happy 11th anniversary with husband Adam Shulman: ‘I was so happy’
In October, Hathaway shared another wedding anniversary mishap while appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers. On the day she and Shulman celebrated their 11th anniversary in September, heavy rains forced them to stay inside.
“It was raining,” she said of their anniversary.[It was] last Friday.”
“Oh yes, it’s a terrible day. It is literally the sky sending a sign. Yes,” answered host Seth Meyers.
“That you should just let your ambition die,” Hathaway quipped. “And so we did.”
The couple ended up enjoying a cozy night on the couch watching TV together. “We just love getting back into our pajamas,” she told Meyers, 49. “You know I had a moment where I was curled up on his chest and we watched for three hours Abbott Elementary School and I said, ‘I’m so happy. This is the right guy for me.’ ”
