Annette O’Toole and Michael McKean: All About the Actors’ Decades-Long Marriage

Annette O’Toole and Michael McKean have one of Hollywood’s longest-running love stories.

Both actors with long resumes, the couple knew each other in the 1970s before reuniting on a film set in 1998 and marrying in 1999.

McKean celebrated his 23rd wedding anniversary on March 20, 2022 with sweet message to O’Toole on X (formerly Twitter). “23 years ago I married my best friend and it’s working out beautifully. Thanks for saying yes,” he wrote.

McKean has long been known for his unconventional comedic style in Christopher Guest films such as Best in show and Strong wind while O’Toole has been beloved since her time Smallville and Nash Bridges. He is currently acting in A virgin riverwhich is now in its fifth season. The couple even collaborated on a film Final justice and a TV show A boy meets the world.

In an interview with S. 2022 Hello!, O’Toole and McKean toured their Los Angeles home, talking about why it helps their relationship. O’Toole said the living room is the size of a “mini ballroom, perfect for big personalities that the whole household seems to be blessed with. We sing, we dance, we make music…try to stop us.”

McKean first became famous Laverne & Shirley, which lasted from 1976 to 1983, around the same time he first met O’Toole. He has been a series regular since then Saturday night live, better call Saul and Diplomat among others, apart from acting in films including Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and Broadway plays like Hair spray.

O’Toole has been a staple of television since the ’90s, including miniseries It, based on Stephen King’s novel, and continued her career in series such as Huntress and Punisher. O’Toole also appeared in films such as 48 hours and Superman III.

They met decades before their romantic relationship

In the 1970s, McKean and O’Toole were friends, but not close. She recalled in a 2018 video for TheaterMania that they often met at parties hosted by actors like Rob Reiner and Ed Begley Jr.

“Michael and I actually met years ago when he was working Laverne & Shirley“, O’Toole told Soundtrack.net in 2004. “I was this actress, and we could meet at various screenings; we had mutual friends, but we didn’t really know each other well. We had very different lives.”

When the two starred in the 1998 Lifetime movie final justice, they got back together — and sparks flew during filming.

One night, O’Toole told TheaterMania, McKean called her while she was babysitting her daughter, Anna, from her first marriage to Bill Geisslinger. “I heard everything in his voice,” O’Toole recalled. “I just heard he likes me that way.”

McKean interjected: “I think you heard in my voice either, ‘I’m going all out here.’ ”

“And I did something I’ve only seen in movies,” the actress continued. “I hung up the phone. I said, ‘I really, really want to talk to you, but Anna is so sick. Can we talk tomorrow?’ He said, ‘Yes, I’ll call you tomorrow.’ I thought, he’s never going to call me tomorrow. But I put the phone down and went to the bathroom and jumped up and down screaming silently.”

They had their first date at a charity concert where Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison played. “I would have married him that day,” O’Toole said with tears in her eyes. The couple got married in March 1999.

“As a gag, I told her, ‘And they said it wouldn’t last,’ but nobody said that,” McKean recalled to TheaterMania. “They were like, ‘Sure, ok.’ ”

Both are musicians

McKean has a long career writing songs for movies, but it wasn’t until 2001 that O’Toole joined him in playing with the tunes. The pair worked together on three songs for the film Strong wind during the long drive from Los Angeles to Vancouver.

“Michael has worked with other people over the years, but this is my first time doing this,” the actress told Soundtrack.net in 2004. “Every time we write something, it just gives me more confidence to do it next time.”

O’Toole and McKean have collaborated many times

McKean guest starred in three episodes Smallville during its 10-season run, in which O’Toole played Clark Kent’s mother. They also appeared together as Topanga’s parents A boy meets the world.

O’Toole and McKean continued to collaborate on music as well. In 2004, the couple included their song on the Disney album titled A world of happiness.

“We wrote a song for her called ‘What could be better?’ and we actually wrote it while we were on set Smallville,” O’Toole told Soundtrack.net. “That’s the goal — to be those people you can call when you need a song for this movie or this artist. Now we have a bunch of songs, we’re building a library!”

They were nominated for an Oscar together

The duo is working on songs for Strong wind it earned them an Oscar nomination.

In the 1960s film about musicians, McKean appeared as a member of the fictional band Folksmen. O’Toole did not have a role in the film, but she played an important role, working with her husband to write the film’s biggest song, “Kiss at the End of the Rainbow.”

In the film, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara perform the tune. McKean and O’Toole were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 2004 Academy Awards.

They have a cute bedtime ritual

O’Toole and McKean said vanity fair in 2022, which they read to each other every night — even when they’re in different locations.

“Michael has a very melodious voice,” said the actress. “I get up really early in the morning, so by the end of the night I’m really tired, and his voice puts me completely to sleep, not because I’m bored, but because it’s so soothing.”
