Anupama Upadhyaya was born on Saturday, February 12, 2005 in New Delhi, India (age 17 years 2022). Initially, Anupama Upadhyaya’s father Naveen Upadhyaya took her to attend badminton training at the Yamuna Sports Center in New Delhi during the holidays. Originally from Almora in Uttarakhand, Anupama and her family visited Almora during the school holidays where she met coach DK Sen, father of 2021 World Championships bronze medalist Lakshya Sen. Anupama then decided to train under coach DK Sen for the next three seasons for several years until 2018. Later, coach DK Sen moved to Bangalore, following which Anupama and her mother moved to Panchkula, Haryana, living in a rented apartment for the next eighteen months. Anupama participated in various district-level and national-level badminton tournaments in Panchkula before moving to Bengaluru. In Bangalore, Anupama started her training at Prakash Padukone Academy.

Anupama Upadhyaya’s family hails from Khanuli (Masi) village in Chaukhutia tehsil, Almora, Uttarakhand.

Parents and siblings

Anupama Upadhyaya’s father, Naveen Upadhyaya, served as a Sub-Inspector of Delhi Police; however, in March 2020, he resigned and shifted to Bengaluru to focus on Anupama’s badminton career. Naveen Upadhyaya spoke about this in an interview and said:

We have now completely shifted from Delhi to Bangalore. I worked in Delhi Police but resigned as sub-inspector in March 2020 to focus on my daughter’s badminton career. We rented an apartment near the PPBA. Staying together will provide her with moral support. If we’re close to her, she doesn’t have to worry about anything. We hope to one day see our daughter represent the Indian senior team in the Olympics. “

Profession

In 2016, Anupama Upadhyaya won her first national level title in the U-13 category at the National Singles and Doubles Tournament held in Vijayawada. In 2018, she participated in the Asian Youth Badminton Championships in Myanmar and made her international debut. Anupama Upadhyaya reached the quarter-finals of the tournament. In 2019, she participated in the next Asian Youth Badminton Championships. In badminton, Anupama reached the quarter-finals. In the same year, she won a bronze medal at the BAI U-19 National Championships in Bangalore, India. In 2019, she won the U-15 National Singles Championship in Odisha. In an interview with the media, she talked about her badminton career and said,

I started playing badminton as a leisure activity and it was not until I moved to Almora to train under Mr. DK Sen that I considered playing badminton professionally. I would also seek advice from Lakshya Sen bhaiya whenever he visited Almora. In 2018, when the Senator moved to Bengaluru, I moved to Panchkula and lived with my mother in a rented house for 18 months. Reaching the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Junior Championships was an inspiring moment in my career. ”

In 2020, Anupama Upadhyaya moved to Bangalore to train in badminton at Prakash Padukone Academy. In 2021, Anupama participated in the Infosys Foundation India Open International Challenge. In the competition, she won the gold medal.

In 2022, she participated in the Syed Modi International Super 300. Anupama reached the semi-finals of the competition.

In the same year, she won the Uganda Junior Open Championship. In the final, Anupama Upadhyaya defeated Aditi Bhatt with a score of 17-21, 21-14, 21-17. In an interview, she talked about the Uganda Junior Open and said,

After the pandemic ended, I spent some time in Delhi focusing on improving my fitness. Winning the Infosys Open last year gave me confidence that my training was going well. Winning the title in Poland was a special moment. Now, apart from the BWF Super 100 Vietnam Open, my target is to do well in the Nagpur International Challenge and the Raipur International Challenge. In the academy, coach Mr. Vimal Kumar made us work hard to increase the speed of the shuttle like Saina Nehwal Didi and PV Sindhu Didi. ”

In March 2022, she won her first adult championship at the Polish Open in Poland, Europe.
