Following this, the Supreme Court sacked Anurag in January 2017 and asked him to resign as BCCI president. But Thakur refused to accept the verdict. We ended the protest after talking to the Union Sports Minister (Anurag Thakur) and all the athletes told him about the sexual harassment. He tried to suppress the matter by forming a committee. No action was taken at that time. ”
Criticized for speaking in parliament
In July 2024, Anurag made caste-based remarks like “Jiski Jaat Ka Pata Nahin, Woh Ganna Ki Baat Karta Hai” in the Lok Sabha, which was criticized by the opposition parties in the Lok Sabha. Thereafter, many parts of his speech were deleted from the parliamentary record at the insistence of the Congress party. However, the caste part of the speech was not removed. A privilege motion was also moved by the Government of India committee against Narendra Modi when he posted a link to Thakur’s full, uncensored speech on his social media account. Many sources claim that the caste issue was not mentioned in his speech as Thakur did not specifically address anyone and therefore there was no solid basis for eradicating the caste issue.
