Aquarius Compatibility: How the Air Sign Pairs with Each Zodiac

Aquarians are full of curiosity, intellect and eccentricity – all of which comes to the fore in their relationships.

Since it’s the last air sign on the zodiac calendar, those with an Aquarius sun sign “think things through before making decisions,” Lisa Stardust, astrologer and three-time bestselling author, tells PEOPLE.

They tend to get along well with other air signs Libra and Gemini, who are also known to seek intellectual stimulation, says astrologer Alberto Toribio.

“The element of air makes them cerebral, lying in the world of the intellect,” says Toribio, adding that Aquarians have “a desire for knowledge and building their way of life around abstract logic and reasoning.”

Despite their gregarious nature and fun-filled friendships, Aquarians can be emotionally distant, says Stardust, which can lead to problems in romantic relationships.

What are the key traits of Aquarius?

According to Stardust, Aquarians are valued for their “independence, intelligence and analytical abilities.” Their introspective nature can lead others to perceive them as quiet.

Those with an Aquarius sun sign are also known to be quirky and have diverse interests.

“Aquarians are compassionate, humanitarian and generous, with a unique and sometimes eccentric perspective, making them the rebels of the zodiac,” explains Stardust. “They tend to see things the way they want to see them, not the way they are.”

Toribio points out that Aquarius’s curiosity and intellect are often evident in social situations.

“They like to keep up with what’s going on in the world and keep up with what’s the next big thing,” says the astrologer. “You can see them running through different social circles, which is a demonstration of their vast knowledge and interests.”

Which signs are Aquarius most compatible with?

In general, Aquarians get along well with other air signs (Gemini and Libra), who share similar temperaments and interests. However, other seemingly opposing signs also have compatibility with Aquarius.

Toribio notes that Geminis are “extroverted gossipers” who love to learn, traits that pair well with social Aquarius.

Friends Alums Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox’s decades-long friendship is proof that an Aquarius-Gemini relationship is built to last.

Libra

Like Gemini, Libra values ​​beauty and intellect, but they tend to move at a slower pace—a trait that Toribio says Aquarians admire.

“Libra is much calmer than Gemini, it purifies and intellectualizes the beauty in the world,” he explains.

Aquarians and Libras are also likely to enjoy mutual support.

“These two air signs can be great friends because they will push each other to achieve greatness,” says Stardust. “They will not hold each other back, they will stand and support each other in times of need or struggle.”

Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen are a good example of this compatibility. The couple has been married since 2010 and has three children, cheering each other on on red carpets and on social media.

“Aquarius and Capricorn are neighboring signs, which allows them to learn from each other,” she says. “They can offer words of wisdom and companionship, making them excellent friends and lovers.”

Stardust adds, “Their similarities bring them together in the sky, fostering a sense of closeness between them.”

Patrick Dempsey and his wife Jillian — a Capricorn and Aquarius couple — have been doing well since they married in 1999 and have three children.

Aquarians are also compatible with the opposite sign on the zodiac wheel — Leo. Toribio says Leo’s thirst for life helps fuel the ever-ambitious Aquarius.

“Aquarians have a desire not only to defy the world, but also to be validated by it,” he explains. “When it comes to their partner, they look for someone who reflects and embodies the things they find beautiful.”

Toribio continues, “A Leo lives its life trying to pamper itself and grow, a quality that Aquarians find admirable.”

Which signs are Aquarians least compatible with?

The groundedness of earth signs and the deep emotions of water signs can lead to conflict in relationships with Aquarians. There can also be tension with other “fixed” signs, especially Taurus.

Fixed signs like Aquarius tend to be set in their own ways, so problems can arise when paired with another fixed sign like Taurus. Toribio notes that “reluctance on both sides to change or meet someone halfway” is often a source of conflict.

Taurus’ desire for stability can also clash with Aquarius’ rebellious attitude, says Stardust.

“Although these two signs may be attracted to each other, it might be difficult for them to get close and bond over things because of their different ideals and the way they deal with situations,” explains the astrologer.

Virgin

Virgo is another earth sign that Aquarius may not get along with.

“It can be hard for a Virgo to understand what’s going on in an Aquarius’ mind,” says Stardust. “Just when Virgo thinks they’ve got Aquarius figured out, they’ll change their perspective, causing Virgo to have to start over and grasp a whole new perspective.”

Cancer

Water signs are known for being emotional, so Cancer’s need for affection and appreciation doesn’t sit well with Aquarius.

“Aquarius can be more distant and impartial, which can sometimes lead to conflict between the two signs,” says Stardust.

What is the compatibility of Aquarius with other signs?

Aquarius shares an interesting relationship with another fixed sign, Scorpio. While Toribio notes that Aquarians can become frustrated when water signs lead their emotions, Stardust says the two can have a positive relationship.

“They find a lot of determination and comfort in each other,” she says. “Both are evolutionary and transformative and open to an ideology ahead of its time. They will fully embrace each other’s spirit in trying to bring about radical change.”

Just look at Scorpio Matthew McConaughey and Aquarius Camila Alves, who have been married for over a decade.

Fire signs are hit or miss when it comes to Aquarius compatibility. Because of their opposite position on the zodiac wheel, Leo is usually the most compatible fire sign for Aquarius, but Aries and Sagittarius also possess some useful traits.

Toribio says that Aries’ energy and adventurous spirit are great for exploring Aquarius’ different interests, but Stardust warns that Aries’ confidence can be overwhelming.

“Aquarius can have a harmonious friendship with an Aries if the Aries doesn’t become too intrusive,” she says. “It would be best to find a balance where I can have a peaceful relationship without the overwhelming drama and excitement that Aries usually brings.”

Meanwhile, Aquarius and Sagittarius share a desire for enlightenment, making them a good match for a fulfilling relationship.

“They’re independent and adventurous, and once they’ve made a positive impact on the world, they tend to focus on the present and the future rather than dwelling on the past,” says Stardust. “They prefer to move forward and develop together.”
