Argylle Ending Explained: All About the Spy Thriller’s Major Plot Twist — and a Potential Sequel

NOTE: This story contains major spoilers for Argyllin theaters now.

Cry for Argyllnew spy thriller from Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn, promises a big plot: “Once you know the secret, don’t let the cat out of the bag.” (There’s also a nod to the pet cat that spends most of the film in a backpack.)

The film opens with Bryce Dallas Howard as a famous author named Elly Conway, who spends her reclusive life writing spy novels while her mother (Catherine O’Hara) serves as a remote beta reader.

In the film, her brilliant stories come to life on screen in sequences starring Henry Cavill as her protagonist, secret agent Argylle, plus John Cena, Dua Lipa and Ariana DeBose.

After meeting a real-life spy on a train – Aidan Sam Rockwell – Elly finds herself in the middle of high-stakes espionage like her books. In fact, the villainous Ritter (Bryan Cranston) is out to capture Elly since her spy novels have been shown to predict actual global events.

Fans know all of the above from the trailer. However, it’s a surprising plot twist revealed halfway through the film that shakes things up: Elly is actually a highly trained, elite spy with amnesia, and the stories in her book are her memories (and valuable top-secret information) emanating from her subconscious. Even she can’t believe the truth at first.

The twist is not unlike the 1996 Geena Davis film A long kiss good night, which also starred Samuel L. Jackson. Here, Jackson is former CIA Deputy Director Alfred Solomon, the one who helps Elly remember that she is Rachel, that is, Agent R.

Meanwhile, Cranston is revealed to be the man Elly thought was her father. He infiltrated her fake life and brainwashed Rachel into taking on the role of Elly with the help of O’Hara “Ruth”, also undercover, not her real mother.

Howard’s character Rachel, after some switching allegiances back and forth, remembers her impressive skills and which side she’s on, ultimately saving the day at the last possible minute.

She then resumes her forgotten romance with Aidan and returns to being a writer. At one of her author speaking engagements in the final moments of the film, Cavill appears in the crowd, no longer just the back-up fantasy spy Elly envisioned – raising more questions for the sequel.

It’s up to the public, if they give us a thumbs up, we’ll give them another one. If they give us a thumbs down, we’ll just, you know, imagine what it would be like.”

Back in 2022. Jurassic World star Howard teased that she is excited to show off her action skills in the Argyll, although at the time she could not elaborate on her top secret character. She described the film as “beautiful bananas”.

“I would like to [do more action films], yes. I just finished shooting a Matthew Vaughn movie that had a huge amount of action,” she said at the time. “I was really, really, really excited about it because I have a background in martial arts. So I said, ‘Okay, it only took 30 years, but it’s good. I’m throwing a punch!’ ”
