Arif Mohammed Khan began his political career as a student leader at Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh. He served as Secretary-General of the AMU Student Union from 1972 to 1973; from 1973 to 1974, he served as President of the AMU Student Union. Arif Khan was a member of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BKD), which later merged with the Janata Party after the 1977 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections . Arif Khan served as a member of the Congress government led by Rajiv Gandhi from 1980 to 1986 and served as Minister of State, responsible for various matters including energy, industrial and corporate affairs, and home affairs .
