Arif Virani Biography, Wiki, Wife, Office, MP – As of July 2023, Arif Virani PC KC MP, Canadian lawyer and politician, served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He was born on 23 November 1971. Virani, a member of the Liberal Party, is the Member of Parliament for Parkdale—High Park.

Prior to his appointment as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, he held a number of secretarial positions in Parliament, including Ministers of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship from 2015 to 2017, Canadian Heritage (Multiculturalism), from 2017 to 2018, Minister of Justice and state attorney from 2018 to 2021, and international trade, export promotion, small economy and economic development from 2021 to 20.

Arif Virani was originally elected to represent Parkdale—High Park in the House of Representatives in 2015, and was re-elected in 2019 and 2021. As of December 2021, Arif holds the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade, a position nominated by Prime Minister Trudeau.
In his capacity as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration (2015-2017), Arif helped Canada accept more than 50,000 Syrian refugees.
Arif worked on multiculturalism, rebuilding Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy, and co-developing Canada’s historic Indigenous Languages Act with First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders during his tenure as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Heritage (2017–18), and the post he was appointed by the prime minister.
Arif served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice from 2018 to 2021, improving access to justice, increasing funding for legal aid, removing structural barriers from the court system and fighting online hate.
Arif is an Ismaili Muslim from Gujarat, originally from India. A refugee from Uganda, he immigrated to Canada in 1972. Before being elected to the government, he worked as a constitutional litigator, fighting for access to justice and human rights.
Arif was an analyst at the Canadian Human Rights Commission, an investigator at the Montreal-based Human Rights Commission, and an associate lawyer at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which is trying genocide.
Arif applied his love of equality and inclusiveness to his work as a Member of Parliament. He is a staunch advocate of domestic and international human rights, the fight against institutional racism and his position as President of the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet in the House of Commons.
Arif received the 2001 Harold G. Fox Litigation Fellowship at Middle Temple, London, United Kingdom, and the 2008 Wilson-Prichard Award at the University of Toronto in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and the community. Arif was also one of the founding board members of the SALCO Legal Aid Clinic in Toronto. He received the 2017 South Asian Bar Association Award for Legal Excellence.
Arif was a dedicated member of the Parkdale-High Park community. She supports the Redwood Shelter for battered women, volunteers frequently at the Parkdale Food Bank, and leads neighborhood initiatives to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness. Arif flooded the neighborhood rink as a volunteer with Roncyworks and Sorauren Park Hosers.
After graduating with honors in history and political science from McGill, Arif went to the University of Toronto to complete his LL.B., where he graduated as a freshman. Arif worked with two MPs in Ottawa for a year while graduating as part of the Parliamentary Internship Program.
Arif is fluent in Hindi, French and English. His works in Tibetan, Polish and Ukrainian are in progress. He is a devoted husband, father and coach to two young, boisterous sons.

In 1994, Virani graduated from McGill University with a combined BA in Political Science and History. He then graduated from the University of Toronto with a law degree. Virani continued to be active on the alumni committee of the University of Toronto Law School after graduating.

In 1999, Virani completed an internship at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP to begin his legal career. A Harold G. Fox scholarship helped him work in London, United Kingdom, for a year afterward. With the help of this scholarship, recent graduates of the Bar Admission Course can study with renowned lawyers at the Inns of Court in London, United Kingdom.
Later, in 2003, he began working as a lawyer in the constitutional law division of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. He participated in two Supreme Court of Canada cases while working for the Ontario Constitutional Law Division.
He is a Member of Parliament and does not practice law now. According to the Law Society of Ontario, he remains an L1 licensed solicitor. This means that he is “licensed to practice law as a solicitor and solicitor in Ontario.”
