television
Feroze Khan made his television debut in BR Chopra’s epic Mahabharata (1988) as Arjun, a role that changed his life so much that he is still referred to as Arjun in his personal life. Talking about this sea change in his life, he said:
My real name is Firoz Khan but the role of Arjun made me so famous that even my mother calls me Arjun at home.”
In an interview, when asked how he got the role of Arjun in Mahabharata, he said,
I am a firm believer in destiny. Basically I never thought of doing any TV serial. I studied in Oxford and then came back to join Taj Mahal. But acting always fascinated me. One day, I was informed that auditions were going on for a film. But unfortunately, I was late and other actors were already cast. I was a bit depressed and passed by Mr. BR Chopra’s house. I saw a bunch of famous actors and actresses there. I was fascinated. I met Mr. Gufi Pantel (who played “Shakuni” in Mahabharata). He told me that auditions for Mahabharata were going on and insisted that I go for it. I knew nothing about the script of Mahabharata at that time. To my surprise, the lines I was given were in Hindi and I was not at all familiar with the language. So, I translated the lines into English first and then went for the audition. Fortunately, a week later I got to know that I was chosen to play the role of Arjun. “
Initially, he was not confident about playing Arjun in Mahabharata as he was not very fluent in Hindi. Talking about the role, he said:
Initially, I had difficulty understanding the dialogues, but the late Rahi Masoom Raza and Pandit Narendra Sharma (scriptwriter) helped me a lot and I overcame the difficulties. With time, I improved and everything became easy and fun.”
