Armie Hammer and Fiancée Marina Gris Break Up After Apparent Engagement: ‘I Know Him as a Gentleman’

Armie Hammer’s apparently short-lived engagement has come to an end.

On Thursday, a woman named Marina Gris shared on her Instagram Story that she and Hammer, 37, had called it quits after he proposed to her back in October.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end of my journey with Armie, a chapter that was deeply personal and warmly meaningful in my life and closed a month ago,” Gris wrote in her Instagram Story.

Addressing the sexual assault allegations previously leveled against the actor, she wrote: “Before you send me another nasty message: I am aware of the conversations and stories going around about him. It is important for me to say that my personal experiences with Armie have been positive and in no way reflects these allegations.”

“I speak only from my perspective and my experiences and am not responsible for any of his past, present or future relationships,” she added, noting that she felt the couple’s relationship “was a space where I felt deeply valued, supported, loved and understood.”

“I know him to be a gentleman in every sense of the word,” Gris wrote of Hammer.

A representative for Hammer did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Thursday.

PEOPLE previously confirmed that it is Call me by your name the actor reached a settlement in his divorce from ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers in June 2023.

“Our decision to marry and plans for our future together were rooted in strength, encouragement and deep care for each other,” Gris wrote in a statement on Instagram Story. “The decision to part ways, while difficult, was made with grace and respect, marking a wonderful end to our journey together.”

Gris previously shared photos on Instagram in October 2023 of what appeared to be an engagement ring and her sitting with a man who appeared to be Hammer. “I said ‘What is stupid question day, American?’👰‍♀️🥹” she captioned the post at the time.

Although Hammer doesn’t follow her on her verified Instagram account, she does, and the actor commented on a post Gris shared in October 2023, showing off a bouquet of flowers and a handwritten note he appeared to have sent her.

“I love my little RM…” he wrote in the comment, in response to Gris’s caption that he was “the most amazing man I’ve ever met and ever existed.”

It is not clear when Gris and Hammer started dating. Shortly after PEOPLE confirmed the divorce settlement from Chambers, 41, the actor was seen spending time in Santa Margherita, Italy with a woman identified by TMZ as his ex-girlfriend Lisa Perejma.

Hammer has faced numerous allegations of sexual abuse in recent years. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE in May 2023 that he would not be charged with sexual assault following an investigation into the alleged 2017 sexual assault that began in March 2021.

Since Hammer’s divorce settlement, he’s stayed out of the spotlight, but returned to Instagram in November with a series of posts. He recently shared a photo of himself sitting with a group of people on Nov. 21, captioning it, “Grateful for the time with my cousins!”
