Armie Hammer 'Wants to Prove Himself and Win Back Credibility' After Controversy (Exclusive Sources)

After Armie Hammer resurfaced and discussed his “career death” on a recent podcast episode, a source close to Hammer told PEOPLE that the actor, 37, is ready to work as an actor again.

“He wants to prove himself and regain credibility by breaking back into Hollywood,” says the insider. “He doesn’t want to be seen as receiving favors.”

Adds another source: “He wasn’t relying on family money or what people might think because he’s ‘The Hammer’. He seems to have really gone to great lengths with his treatment.”

Hammer, who became famous in Hollywood with roles in films such as 2010 Social network and in 2016 Call me by your namehe has acted in only two films since 2021. The actor’s career has been on hiatus since allegations of sexual and physical abuse first surfaced in 2021. He last appeared in 2022 Murder Mystery. While appearing in the June 16 episode Painful lessons podcast, Hammer called the cannibal accusations “bizarre” but said he now feels “grateful for every bit” of the experience “because where I was in my life before all these things happened to me was not good.”

“There were things that people said about me that just seemed so out of the ordinary … that I was a cannibal,” he said during that podcast appearance. “Now I’m able to look at it with a sense of distance and perspective and be like, ‘That’s funny.’ Like, people called me a cannibal and everyone believed them.”

“How am I going to be a cannibal?” he added. “It was bizarre, wasn’t it?”

The Call me by your name star divorced ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers in 2020; The former couple, who share two children, reached a settlement in June 2023.

According to the source, Hammer and Chambers co-parented well after the ups and downs of the split. “She was shocked and hurt. While she’s rebuilding her life and focusing on her own passions, she also wants what’s best for the kids and has been supportive of Armie,” the source says.

While Hammer denied all allegations of physical abuse against him in an Air Mail interview in 2023, he admitted to being emotionally abusive to former partners and said at the time that he was sexually abused by a youth pastor when he was 13.

“What it did for me was it introduced sexuality into my life in a way that was completely out of my control. I was powerless in that situation. I had no freedom in that situation,” he said in that interview. “Sexuality was presented to me in a frightening way where I had no control. My interests then went to: I want to be in control of the situation, sexually.”
