Austin Butler wants to soar to the sky!
“I would love to,” the actor tells PEOPLE of learning to fly on Wednesday Lords of the air premiere at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles.
The star caught the flying bug while filming an Apple TV+ miniseries about US Air Force pilots operating behind enemy lines during World War II, which also stars Callum Turner and Anthony Boyle.
“I’m rusty now, but I feel like I could,” Butler, 32, adds of the flying skills he picked up during filming.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg also worked on the miniseries as executive producers, and Butler tells PEOPLE it was a “pleasure” to work with Hanks, 67.
“He approaches everything with such care and kindness, he does so much research and reads constantly about the period,” says Butler. “He’s a pleasure to work with, whether he’s in front of or behind the camera.”
Another of Butler’s co-stars, Barry Keoghan, 31, also recently opened up about how much fun the cast had on the set of the historical drama.

“I taught him how to box,” Dublin-born Keoghan said GQ earlier this month teaching Elvis the star does some tricks. And according to Keoghan, Butler was “pretty good” at sparring.
The Irish star also shared her cast with the release Lords of the air made it possible to realize a long-standing dream.

“I’ve always wanted to play a pilot,” said Keoghan, adding that he was partly inspired by watching Tom Hardy play an RAF fighter pilot. Dunkirkwhile he was land-bound as a British soldier in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film.
IN Lords of the air, Butler plays pilot Major Gale Cleven (aka Buck), who is part of the 100th Bomb Group in the US Air Force. Nicknamed the “Bloody Hundred,” the unit took part in numerous “dangerous bombing raids over Nazi Germany” while facing “cold conditions, lack of oxygen and the sheer terror of combat fought at 25,000 feet in the air,” according to the official synopsis. .

The series is based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller and seeks to show “the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horrors of Hitler’s Third Reich.”

A trailer released on December 6 teased the show’s dramatic action and emotional tone, with Major John Egan (Callum Turner) telling his men that they were responsible for “35 planes and 350 crew.” Elsewhere, he states that the 100th Bomb Group was deployed “straight into Hitler’s territory” in “the largest air force ever assembled in the history of mankind.”
In addition to Butler, Keoghan and Turner, the series also stars Sawyer Spielberg, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
The first two episodes Lords of the air premieres January 24 on Apple TV+.
