Avatar 3 Title Revealed at D23: 'Get Ready to Journey Back to Pandora'

third Avatar the film will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ashes.

The sequel, due in theaters on December 19, 2025, was officially titled on August 9 at Disney’s D23 fan event held in Anaheim, California.

“Prepare to return to Pandora,” read the message Avatar Instagram page.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña star in James Cameron’s films. The first of the blockbuster franchise hit theaters in 2009, followed by a sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water13 years later in 2022.

Cameron, 69, he told PEOPLE in December 2023 that Kate Winslet, who joined the cast in #2, will reprise her role as Ronal in the third film. He said Winslet “went to school” learning from “husband-wife shamanic practice” to master the techniques for the sequel.

“When you see [Winslet] doing that purification ritual to try to bring Kitty to life in the movie and some of the things she’s going to do in the third movie, that’s based on real practice,” he said.

Additionally, Worthington, 48, told PEOPLE in January that the next Avatar the film will be “bigger than you can imagine.”

Cameron said in February that he had plans for seven Avatar movies so far. “We’re fully prepared for the fifth film, and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh, although I’ll probably pass the baton at that point,” Cameron told PEOPLE at the time. “I mean, mortality is catching up with them. But I mean, we enjoy what we do. We love it. We work with great people.”

Cameron added, “Star Trek, Star Warsworld-building franchises that have been around since I was a kid, those were my inspirations. … We are still a young universe. We only have two movies, we’re halfway through the third now. To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you have to put all your heart and energy into it.”
