BS Yediyurappa was born on Saturday, February 27, 1943 in Bookanakere village, Mandya district, Karnataka (age 81 years 2024). His zodiac sign is Pisces. He completed his primary education from a local school in Bukankal and his intermediate education from PES College, Mandya, Karnataka. He pursued his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bangalore University.
After college, he started working as a Clerk I in the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Karnataka in 1965. He soon quit his job and moved to Shikaripura where he worked as a clerk in a rice mill owned by Veerabhadra Shastri. . Two years later, he married Shastri’s daughter. Yediyurappa and his wife moved to the small town of Shivamogga in Karnataka, where he opened a hardware store.

BS Yediyurappa belongs to the Lingayat community. His father Siddalingappa was a farmer and his mother Puttathayamma was a housewife. He has two brothers and two sisters. His mother died when he was 4 years old. Yediyurappa married Mythra Devi in 1967. Mythra Devi died in 2004 after falling into a water tank while fetching water from it. They have 5 children; two sons, BY Raghavendra and BY Vijyaendra, and 3 daughters, SY Umadevi, BY Arunadevi and BY Padmavati. Yediyurappa did not remarry after the death of his wife and was a widower.

BS Yediyurappa has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since his college days. In 1970, he was appointed secretary of RSS Shikaripura detachment. He was jailed for 45 days in Bellary and Shimoga during the Emergency. In 1977, he was appointed president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political wing of the RSS. In 1980, after the People’s Party changed its name to the People’s Party, he was appointed Chairman of the Shikaripura Party of the People’s Party. In 1983, he was elected to the Karnataka Lok Sabha for the first time. In 1985, he was appointed president of the Shimoga branch. In 1988, he was appointed president of the Karnataka BJP.
In 1999, he lost the Karnataka Assembly elections but was nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party to the upper house of the Karnataka Assembly. In 2006, the Bharatiya Janata Party formed an alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular Party) to form the government in Karnataka. It was decided in the meeting that HD Kumaraswamy will serve as chief minister for 20 months while Yediyurappa will serve as chief minister for the next 20 months. When Kumaraswamy’s 20-month term ended, he refused to give up the chief minister’s post. On October 5, 2007, Yeddyurappa resigned and the BJP withdrew its support for the Kumaraswamy government. On November 7, 2007, the BJP and JD(S) agreed to Yeddyurappa as the chief minister, and he was sworn in as the chief minister on November 12, 2007. However, differences between the JD(S) and the BJP over various ministries led to Yediyurappa’s resignation as chief minister on November 19, 2007.
In 2008, new elections were held in Karnataka. Yediyurappa contested from Shikaripura constituency and won. Yediyurappa also led the BJP to its first victory in the south Indian state. On May 30, 2008, Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. On July 31, 2011, Yediyurappa had to resign as Chief Minister of Karnataka; the Karnataka Lokayukta submitted a report on illegal mining, which alleged that Yediyurappa had engaged in illegal mining through several land deals and illegal Profits from ore exports. On November 30, 2012, he resigned as an MP and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and established his own political party, the Karnataka People’s Party, on December 9, 2012.
Yediyurappa won as MLA from Shikaripura constituency but his party performed poorly in Karnataka. In November 2013, he announced that he would rejoin the Bharatiya Janata Party, and on January 2, 2014, he merged his party with the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2016, Yediyurappa was appointed president of the Karnataka BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that Yeddyurappa will be the chief ministerial candidate in the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. The BJP won 104 seats (8 short of majority). He was sworn in as chief minister on May 17, 2018, and had 15 days to prove his majority in the House of Representatives. However, India’s Supreme Court stepped in and ordered a vote of confidence within two days. Yediyurappa failed to prove his majority and had to resign on May 19, 2018. This makes him the shortest-serving Prime Minister in the history of India; as he served as CM for only two days.
In July 2019, 16 MLAs from the JDS Congress government submitted their resignations. This resulted in the government losing its majority in the Karnataka Assembly. On July 23, 2019, the ground floor test was ordered and the government had to step down after HD Kumaraswamy failed to win the ground floor test. Yediyurappa was invited by Karnataka Governor Vajubai Vara to form the government and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on July 26, 2019.

- In 2004, there were multiple rumors that Yediyurappa was having an affair with Shobha Karandlaje; a Lok Sabha member from Karnataka. Despite this, both have denied the romance. There are also rumors that Yeddyurappa and Shobha got married in a secret ceremony.
- In 2009, a Karnataka magistrate ordered an inquiry into the death of Yediyurappa’s wife. His wife fell into the tank and drowned. Some have claimed that her wife’s death was a conspiracy as the circumstances were very suspicious. His wife was reportedly 5 feet 5 inches tall and the tank she fell into had only 4 feet of water.
- In 2011, Yediyurappa was forced by the Bharatiya Janata Party to resign as the chief minister of Karnataka. The Karnataka district court accused him of corruption. Yediyurappa resigned and was jailed on October 15, 2011.
- In April 2016, he was criticized after Karnataka sugar tycoon Murugesh Nirani gifted him a Mercedes SUV worth INR 1 crore. Yeddyurappa traveled to drought-affected areas of Karnata state in an SUV. The opposition criticized him for accepting gifts and traveling in luxury cars at a time when people in Karnataka were suffering.
- In May 2017, Yediyurappa along with other leaders visited the home of a Dalit man for breakfast. That man made Pulao for the leader. According to reports, Yediyurappa did not eat the food prepared by the Dalits but ordered food from a nearby hotel. Several leaders criticized his move, saying the BJP did not consider Dalits equal.
- In February 2019, several audio tapes containing conversations between Yediyurappa and other Karnataka MLAs came to light. The tapes show that many MLAs will be given 500 million Indian rupees to quit the party and join the Bharatiya Janata Party. The JD(S) claimed that this was an attempt by Yediyurappa to dissolve the HD Kumaraswamy government.
- In March 2024, Bengaluru’s Sadashivanagara police filed a case under the POCSO Act against Yediyurappa for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl when she and her mother went to visit him on February 2, 2024, seeking to defraud case help. However, Yediyurappa denied the allegations and termed them “baseless”. The woman later died on May 26, 2024, at a private hospital in Hullimavu, Bengaluru. She was reportedly taken to hospital with breathing problems and died that day. Activists who helped her in the case demanded an autopsy. On June 13, 2024, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against him by the Bengaluru Special Court. On June 14, 2024, the Karnataka High Court issued a stay order against his arrest.
