Baby Moose Stuck in Alaska Lake Rescued from 'Sure Demise' by Quick-Thinking Animal Lovers

A baby moose that ended up trapped in an Alaskan lake is lucky to have survived – thanks to the efforts of an Alaskan man and police officers.

Spencer Warren shared video of the rescue in a Facebook post on June 14. The video, titled “Rescued Baby Moose from Lake,” was reposted on Facebook by the Homer Police Department.

In the video, Warren and another officer run toward the edge of a dock on Beluga Lake in Homer, Alaska, where a captured moose is stuck between a dock and a seaplane. The two men work together to pull the small creature up and successfully land the animal on the dock.

The creature looks exhausted after the incident. The video shows the calf falling when it finds itself on dry ground. The video ends with the police officer pushing the animal to stand up, and the baby moose exiting the frame.

“What a wild morning,” Warren captioned the video. “I had to rescue a baby moose that fell into the lake and got stuck between a floatplane and a dock. Thanks to the Homer police for distracting the momma moose and the officer for helping me get the baby out.”

Warren, who works for the outdoor tourism company Destination Alaska Adventure Co., told The Associated Press that he saw the struggling baby moose when he showed up for work around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, to prepare the seaplane for the trip. .

“Oh man, where’s mom? I know she’s around,” he recalled thinking.

Warren noted to the AP that the mother moose was about four feet away from the dock with the other cub when he first arrived. To prevent provoking the mother moose, Warren waited for officers to arrive on the scene to help before jumping in to save the baby moose, which was unable to support itself on the slippery metal float.

Homer Police Lt. Ryan Browning told the AP that the cub likely would have met “certain death” if officers hadn’t stepped in. When police arrived at the scene, officers maneuvered their police vehicle between the mother moose and her distressed calf before attempting to rescue her.

Browning added that the officers are happy that the rescue was successful. “Anytime you can save a little creature, it always feels good,” he said.
