Homeowner Sparks Debate After They 'Shouted' at Parents for Entering Their House Without Permission

A homeowner is seeking advice after yelling at their parents for entering their home without their permission.

It all started when they were suddenly woken up by their dog barking at what they thought was an intruder in their home, a Reddit user (who goes by the name manicbeagle) wrote on Am I A——? forum.

In his recounting of the harrowing event, the original poster (OP) said their father entered their house after allegedly calling twice to pick up the OP for a last-minute family event. The owner of the house notes that they wear earplugs in bed so they don’t hear the phone ringing or him knocking on the door.

“After I took my earplugs out, I could tell someone was in my house and I was obviously terrified,” they wrote. After they realized their dad was in the living room, they started yelling. “I was still half asleep, so I don’t know exactly what else I shouted to him, ‘Of course I didn’t answer you! It’s 9 in the morning!’ and ‘Get out! I’m naked, what about you? Get out!'”

After yelling at his father to leave, the user – who noted he had given his parents a key to his house – says he began to regret the way they reacted.

“I feel bad now,” OP wrote. “After he left, I tried to call my mom, but she didn’t answer. I ended up getting a text from her ‘apologising’ for scaring me, but apparently they were so worried that I hadn’t answered their calls and texts at 9am on Sunday that they came knocking on my door and my windows before than I decide to enter.”

Despite her feelings of regret, the user says she responded to her mom by saying that family events don’t give them the right to “lose their manners about my house.” They also note that due to last-minute planning, parents missed going out with friends and meeting family.

“I’m mad because I missed a trip to the beach with friends this weekend to see my aunt, little cousin, and nephew, and they’re acting like everyone should be bending over backwards to accommodate their last-minute decisions.”

In the comments, several Redditors agree that the user is NTA (not a——), but some argued that their parents shouldn’t have a key to their house.

“NTA,” one person wrote, adding “time to change your locks.” Another added: “NTA unless you keep letting them have a key to your house.”

Meanwhile, others argued that it was the parents who overreacted in this situation.

“If the OP is an adult – which it appears they are – the sane thing to do is assume they’re out somewhere or busy, and not go into their house to search. Parents were out of line here. As if they waited for half an hour, as far as they knew, the OP was only in the store…”

One commenter said it wasn’t worth confronting their parents about the incident and agreed they should change their locks.

“Requesting the key back requires conflict and their agreement. Changing the lock imposes a solution regardless of the objections of OP’s parents,” the commenter wrote. “Parents don’t see how they made a mistake. Don’t drag this out; fix it and then prepare for the next time he acts crazy.”

Others began to discuss the factors that led to the incident in the first place.

“You really MUST NOT sleep with a plug in,” said one. “It’s insanely dangerous and if it’s the difference between not hearing a fire alarm for 30 seconds or not having a perfect dream, please give up that dream.”

Another commenter was quick to jump to OP’s defense: “If I stopped wearing earplugs while sleeping, I’d soon have a psychotic break from acute sleep deprivation.”
