Bad Bunny Doubles as Host and Musical Guest for His Third Saturday Night Live Appearance

Bad Bunny took it Saturday night live stage as host and musical guest, and was joined by a trio of A-list stars in entertaining cameo performances.

On Saturday, the award-winning musician, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, made his third appearance on the New York sketch series — though it was his first time doing double duty.

The show’s cold open pushed the political button that’s been talked about on Capitol Hill this week — House Republicans kicked out Rep. Jim Jordan as a candidate for House speaker. Mikey Day played a congressman from Ohio who is not only angry that he does not have the support of his fellow Republicans, but also confused because did they have the support of Donald Trump.

“How did I lose?” Day’s Jordan asked. “All I want is to get Congress back to work so I can shut it down again!”

Bowen Yang appeared as George Santos, Chloe Fineman as Lauren Boebert and, of course, James Austin Johnson once again hit every note as Donald Trump. “Is this the loser’s office?” Johnson’s Trump said: “People say I would make a great speaker. It’s true, but unfortunately I’ll be too busy campaigning, traveling from city to city visiting their beautiful courtrooms.”

Bad Bunny appeared on stage to deliver his monologue, in which he dismissed the villains who believe he can’t host SNL because English is not his first language.

– I don’t know if they know, but I do whatever I want – said the Grammy winner. “I can host this show in English. I can order McDonald’s in English. I can have sex in English, but I prefer sex in Spanish because it’s just better. I just prefer Spanish.”

With that, Bad Bunny continued his monologue in Spanish. However, to help “translate” to the audience, Pedro Pascal joined him on stage. The rapper asked Pascal, 48, for advice on his monologue since the Chilean actor was the host last season. Pascal suggested that he make a self-deprecating joke about his physical appearance or show the audience an embarrassing photo, but Bad Bunny shamelessly said that he had neither.

In his episode, Bad Bunny was joined on stage by Mick Jagger, who made surprise cameos in two sketches. The 80-year-old rock legend slapped a Puerto Rican rapper while filming a Spanish soap opera and infiltrated the alliance as a nun in disguise to get at the ironically voluptuous nuns.

Lady Gaga also visited Studio 8H to present Bad Bunny’s first musical performance of his recently released track “Un Preview.” Pascal later introduced the host and musical guest’s second performance of the night, “Monaco.”

Bad Bunny appeared in most of the skits throughout the night. In addition to his skits alongside Jagger, he played a rapper who didn’t even have to spit in bars to win a rap battle, a Spanish king who judges what his travelers brought back from the New World, and a tough but wholesome Burt’s Bees employee.

In the pre-recorded video, Bad Bunny is also dressed head to toe as Shrek, green skin and all. He threw wild but strangely mobile Shrek a film that the members of the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy ended up liking, even though Bad Bunny ended up trashing the script.

In a WWE-inspired promo clip he released SNL on the eve of his guest appearance, Bad Bunny came face to face with his significant other, Benita. Cast member James Austin Johnson took on the role of a wrestling announcer who approached Benito in plainclothes asking if he was ready to host.

In the middle of Benito’s response, banging could be heard off camera as the camera panned to Bad Bunny walking into the studio wearing a fake pro wrestling belt SNL written on it. “I’ve got news for you for the weekend, you’re bad,” Bad Bunny announced to Benito, prompting him to tell him to “shut up” before the two got into a verbal argument that ended with them confronting each other menacingly.

In this week’s Weekend Update, Colin Jost mocked Joe Biden, saying the president gave “the same strong message to anyone thinking about attacking Israel — ‘Don’t.’

After showing a montage of Biden saying “don’t” over and over again, Jost said he liked that Biden only needed one word “to get his point across,” but added, “To give you an idea of ​​how affective ‘don’ is t’, that’s the same thing Biden says to his dog before he bites another Secret Service agent.”

Continuing on that train of thought, Jost said that while in Israel, Biden said the Hamas attack was like “9/15/11.”

Saturday was not Bad Bunny’s first foray with SNL, however. On April 25, 2020, the artist appeared remotely during one of Kenan Thompson’s sketches as part of SNL at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

His then officially appeared in person on the show on February 20, 2021, when he was selected to be the musical guest. During that same episode, he appeared in two skits: “Sea Shanty” and “Loco”.

“I’ve always loved acting, but not more than music. Music is always number one,” said Bad Bunny TIME about trying different creative professions. “So when the opportunity to act came up, it came because of my fame and success in music. I tried it and I love it.”
