BAFTA Says It Ejected Audience Member Who Crashed Stage During Oppenheimer Best Film Win

One of OppenheimerThe big wins at the 2024 BAFTA Awards were overshadowed by an uninvited guest.

On Sunday night, the biographical thriller was nominated in 13 categories, winning seven. The award ceremony was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

When writer-director-producer Christopher Nolan, producers Emma Thomas and Charles Roven, and actor Cillian Murphy took the stage to accept the Best Picture award, they were joined by someone they had never worked with before.

According to The Hollywood ReporterThe British Academy declined to name the person but said they were “removed by security” after the stunt.

“The prankster was removed from social media by security last night after he joined the final award winners on stage — we take this very seriously and do not want to give him any publicity by commenting further,” a BAFTA spokesperson added in a statement.

The outlet added that the prankster is reportedly a YouTuber who previously crashed the Brit Awards and FIFA Ballon d’Or awards in France.

During the live broadcast, Nolan, 53, Thomas, 52, Roven, 74, and Murphy, 47, were joined on stage by host Michael J. Fox and BAFTA presenter David Tennant.

The prankster joined the group on stage just as Thomas encouraged his team to share a moment with her.

“Where are you? Come on, all of you!,” said the producer as the YouTuber also made his way from Oppenheimer crew. None of them seemed to recognize his presence during her speech.

The man appeared to be coming from the audience, and like the others at the event, he was also wearing a suit and tie.

Despite the accident, Oppenheimer nevertheless experienced great success. Nolan took home the award for best director, and Murphy took home the trophy for lead actor.

The film was also a big hit with Prince William, per The Daily Telegraph.

“I’m a big fan of Christopher Nolan so I’ll be happy if he wins… I loved it Oppenheimer“, the newspaper reported that the prince said.

William, 41, who has been president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010, also admitted that while he had not “watched Barbie yet,” but he still has a movie to see on his to-do list.

Oppenheimer and Barbietwo completely opposite films, dominated the box office when both were released on the same weekend in July 2023.

Nolan’s blockbuster grossed $82.4 million at the box office and grossed more than $912 million worldwide during its theatrical release.

The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. It follows scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Murphy) as he attempts to build an atomic bomb during World War II.
