She wrote: “This morning I did my last show on local BBC radio. My regular program ended in November but I was asked to do the cover which I happily did. Delaying the inevitable. Today I have to admit defeat. 35 years on local and regional radio and done. Wow.”

The announcement comes as opposition continues to the BBC’s major cuts to its local radio teams across the country.

And Alexa’s departure shocked her followers, who made their feelings about the decision clear.

“What’s happening to local BBC radio is outrageous,” raged one listener on X. “Those in charge should be ashamed of themselves. All the best to you Alex, thank you for your great service.”

Another said: “One of the greats Alex. Filling in for you on The Late Show all those years ago was a privilege because of the family of listeners you built. That’s such a skill. Big love x.”

A third posted: “Big loss Alex. You are a fantastic broadcaster. Really sorry.”

The veteran television presenter has also had a successful acting career, most notably starring in Emmerdale for two years from 1999 to 2001 as headmistress Jean Strickland.

Jean was killed in a hit-and-run accident involving students at her school, Hotten Comprehensive.

She was a regular late-night on-air voice during the 90s on stations including Magic 828 and Network First, before joining BBC Radio York in 2000.

Her move to Radio Tees after a three-year stint at Radio Leeds took place in 2006 and she started with the morning slot before moving to the teatime show.

In November, Alex gave up her last program, the Sunday evening show Songs from the Plays.
