Friends and colleagues remembered the “witty, smart and good” journalist

Nick was known for presenting Reporting Scotland, Drivetime, Nine and Seven Days.

In a statement, news and current affairs presenter Gary Smith said: “Nick was a wonderful colleague.

“He was an extremely talented journalist, presenter and writer – and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around him.

“Our hearts go out to his parents, his partner and all his family and friends.”

Nick, from Wexford, Ireland, has worked in broadcasting for over a decade.

The award-winning presenter also wrote a series of books for children about journalism.

He made a famous laugh in 2017 live on STV news.

Nick was reading a story about a naked pensioner and his wife who went wild late at night in a luxury hotel in Perthshire.

He previously spent two years reporting and presenting RTE News2day.

He later left his staff position at the BBC to focus on writing, but continued to present as a freelance journalist.

Paying tribute at First Minister’s Questions this afternoon, Humza Yousaf told the chamber: “On behalf of the Scottish Government and the party I lead, I wanted to say how saddened we were to learn of the loss of Nick Sheridan.

“Nick was an extremely talented journalist and we will miss him greatly.

“Many of us will no doubt be questioned very seriously by Nick, whether it was on BBC Drivetime or the many other programs he hosted.

“My thoughts are with his family, his many friends and colleagues at what will undoubtedly be a very sad time.”

Friend Connor Gillies said: “A uniquely talented TV presenter, writer and journalist, but above all a thoroughly decent, witty, considerate friend who was a lot of fun.

“An absolute pleasure to know Nick. He thought of everything before himself.

“I’ll always remember the outrageous night out antics.”

TV and radio presenter Amy Irons said: “Absolutely devastated. The world has lost one of its brightest human beings and journalism has lost one of the most talented people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

“We will all miss you very much, Nick.”

Former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “So terribly sad to read this. Really awful. Nick was young, talented, vibrant and full of potential.

“What a terrible, senseless loss. My thoughts are with his family, colleagues and many friends.”

Siobhan Synot said: “Very sad news that BBC Scotland presenter and children’s author Nick Sheridan has passed away.

“Nick was a bright spot in every studio and an enthusiastic on-air interviewer.

“Love and condolences to his friends, family and colleagues.”

BBC Scotland correspondent Fiona Stalker said: “There are no words.

“He was very loved. I am so grateful for every minute with him. The best.”

The BBC’s radio and TV presenter, John Beattie, added: “This is so sad. A great presenter, a great writer and above all a truly wonderful man.”

Host Martin Geissler recalled Nick’s “warm, witty and smart” nature.

He said: “This is such a tragedy. Nick was the best of us. Better than anyone at everything. A brilliant presenter, reporter, cameraman, author, singer, pianist and so much more.

“And all this without an iota of arrogance. Warm, funny, smart and kind. Everyone who met him loved him.”

BAFTA Scotland said it was “incredibly saddened” to learn of Nick’s death.

It added: “A much loved and respected member of our industry. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and colleagues at this difficult time.”

More to come.
