He told his followers that a blocked artery caused a heart attack just 10 minutes before filming began.
The much-loved Bargain Hunt star revealed he was rushed to hospital “with sirens wailing” and straight to the theatre.

John told fans: “On the day when junior doctors stage a one-day strike over back pay, I’d like to pledge my support and say a huge thank you to St Mary’s Hospital Admissions Centre, Paramedics ‘Jess’ and ‘Cat’ who rushed me to Queen Alexandra Hospital with a howl siren and the amazing cinema emergency team who fitted me with a stent that unblocked my heart attack-causing artery just 10 minutes before I was about to film the BBC’s Bargain Hunt auction at my company Nesbits in Southsea.
“I’m not sure how many of my 9 lives are left, but I definitely lost one yesterday.
“To quote the great ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, ‘we have two lives, the second begins when you realize you only have one.’
“I will now switch to a friendlier and more renewable light source instead of the candle I was burning at both ends!
“I’m also sorry to my wife, children, grandchildren, staff and friends for scaring them with ‘Eartha Kitt’.”
After being released from the hospital, John took to social media to update his fans about his health.
He revealed that he had stopped smoking and reduced his alcohol intake.
John said: “The first phase of my rehab is no cigarettes, much less alcohol and more exercise, ie using the gym membership I’ve been paying for and haven’t used in years!
“The second phase of my rehab is getting my scooter and motorcycle back on the road and taking the time to use them instead of just paying for them and not using them like a gym membership!”

First broadcast on BBC One in 2000, Bargain Hunt features two pairs of contestants tasked with buying antiques from a shop or fair and then trying to make a profit at auction. With David Dickinson and Tim Wonnacott among the show’s alumni, let’s take a look at the current presenters.
- Christina Trevanion: As well as presenting, Christina is also an auctioneer and partner at Trevanion & Dean in Shropshire. Her other TV appearances include Antiques Road Trip, Flog It! and Traveling Auctioneers.
- Eric Knowles: An antique dealer with a primary focus on ceramics and glass, Eric has also appeared on Antiques Roadshow, Noel’s House Party, Call My Bluff and Going, Going Gone.
- Natasha Raskin Sharp: Daughter of the artist Philip Raskin, Natasha is an expert in antiques and art, particularly Scottish contemporary art. She also appeared in Antiques Road Trip, Flog It! and For What It’s Worth, among others.
- Charlie Ross: Antiques specialist and auctioneer, Charlie’s career dates back to 1963 joining a local firm of estate agents after leaving school, later progressing to antique furniture. He has also appeared on shows such as Flog It!, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and Antiques Road Trip.
- Caroline Hawley: Away from the Bargain Hunt cameras, Caroline also runs a successful antique shop in Yorkshire.
- Danny Sebastian: Joining Bargain Hunt as an expert in 2017, Danny became part of the 2022 presentation team.
- Roo Irvine: Initially signing on for the show as an antiques expert, Roo later became the main host of Bargain Hunt. She has also appeared in Antiques Road Trip and Flipping Profit.
