Becca Bowen Kissed Her Leading Man in ‘If I’m Being Honest’ Video: ‘I Was So Nervous’ (Exclusive)

Becca Bowen made a career thanks to her ex-boyfriend.

It began with the release of her viral, fan-favorite song “Son of a Gun,” which told the incredible story of the day the country musician watched him bring another woman her concert. And on his upcoming EP, County line and her current single “If I’m Being Honest,” the saga continues.

“These are stories about the last few years of my life being cheated on and getting my heart broken to finally get over it,” Bowen tells PEOPLE from his home in South Carolina. “Now I’m finding my dreams and finding myself again. I didn’t need a man to make me happy.”

And it is this newfound happiness that is shown in the new music video for the song “If I’m Being Honest”, premiered exclusively on PEOPLE. “It shows all the different sides of me and how different men and women handle breakups,” Bowen explains with a laugh.

Indeed, in the span of nearly four minutes of video, Bowen can be seen doing everything from eating ice cream in a pair of sweats to enjoying a hot bath with a glass of wine by her side. But the video really takes off when her friends show up, ready to pick up Bowen for a night out on the town.

“Women have to process their emotions and usually it takes their friends to get them out of the house and out of their rut,” Bowen says of the music video’s story, directed by Sam Aldrich, who recently worked with Gabby Barrett, Bailey Zimmerman and Nate Smith. “Sometimes it takes your friends to say, ‘You’ve got to get over this. Stop mourning some guy who did you wrong.'”

Sure, Bowen has been pretty open about ‘that guy’ who did her wrong, but unlike the “Son of a Gun” video, he doesn’t spring any surprises. Instead, in this video, Bowen can be seen flirting with her leading man, actor Christopher Essex.

And she didn’t just flirt with him.

“So the director called me and told me I had to kiss this guy at the end,” Bowen says of the music video’s sexy climax. “I never met the guy before the day of the shoot. I thought I was going to throw up. I really am. I was so nervous.”

But then the director shouted ‘action’ and after a few words of encouragement, Bowen was ready. “It was such a fun scene. And it really just shows how I’m just going to go and live my life.”

Of course, Bowen’s professional life and personal life have always seemed intertwined, as women whose careers took off when she won Season 5. External channels reality show, For love or likes In 2021, she still communicates with her ex, who serves as the cornerstone of many of her songs.

Granted, Bowen’s ex remains to be seen this one music video.

“I don’t know what his reaction will be,” Bowen admits. “I think the video might shock some people because it’s a bit out of my comfort zone. He just pushed the boundaries a bit. I’ve never exposed myself like that before. But I wanted to get the message across. I think so many people will be able to relate to this.”

And while many focus on the stories behind Bowen’s songs, her new EP really showcases a voice that never seems to get enough credit.

“My background is gospel, blues and country,” says Bowen. “So in some of these songs I felt like I could really portray that gospel-y, bluesy sound. It was so freeing for me to go back to that bluesy kind of vulnerability and sing with everything I’ve got. I wanted people to feel that.”

And make no mistake – it feels good.

“I think for the first time in my life I feel so satisfied,” concludes Bowen. “I’m happy with how far I’ve come and all the obstacles I’ve overcome. I’m very happy at this point in my life.”

And she’s still single—and totally fine with that.

“Until someone really comes into my life and makes it better and is a helper and a supporter and just so we can be there for each other and support each other … that’s what I’m waiting for,” Bowen says. “I just want someone who makes my life better. Nothing toxic. I’m just waiting for the right person. God will send him. He will come.”
