Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Reviews Call the Sequel a Nostalgic 'Blast' with 'Just Enough Tim Burton Juice'

The first reactions are in the after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’with world premiere.

On Wednesday, August 28, the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy-horror bug juice opened the 81st Venice Film Festival, and is mostly praised by critics for its solid nostalgia and fan following.

Stephanie Bunbury of Deadline said the film is “lovely to watch” and that it works better in some places where the 1988 original came off as “quite clunky”.

“Yes, there are a lot of animation joints that haven’t been ironed out by CGI. Some of the props look like Burton bought them at a flea market,” Bunbury wrote. “But it also has a real plot, full of twists and turns… and a climactic musical point in which key cast members belt out Richard Harris’ 1968 pop hit ‘Macarthur Park’ while dancing around a giant cake with frosting exactly the color of snot green.”

“These two worlds and the rules that allow the characters to move between them remain an all-encompassing pleasure,” IndieWire’s Sophie Monks Kaufman wrote in part in the review, awarding it a B+. “Like a strong book-to-film adaptation, a strong sequel retains the soul of the original while drawing on its own ideas.”

Siddhant Adlakha of IGN noted its status as a “must-have legacy sequel”, comparable to recent films such as Top Gun: Maverick. “It’s a silly little sequel to an equally silly original, and it’s hard to imagine wanting or needing much more than that.”
